I ordered a 2014 toyota tacoma xsp-x in a manual trans that gets here tuesday!!! , Ive heard people talking that the auto trans is better, but my first 98 tacoma was manual and that was great, and i own a 2010 toyota tacoma double cab 4x4 now in a auto , so whats the big issue with the new trucks in the manual

I was reading something the other day about the death of the manual transmission. People saying the sales are decreasing enough to where soon the makers won't even offer it as an option except for on sports cars. Hope that isn't the case!

I love my 6 speed, but I am a manual fan. They are a little different: 1st is a little low. Personally, I like this so you can crawl around without having to clutch. It does make you shift to 2nd quick, so it can be annoying around town. The syncros are a little tight; it doesn't feel as smooth to shift as other manuals. Changing to Redline MT-90 synthetic helps a lot. I changed mine at only 1100 miles, it made a huge difference. It is true that the RPM is a little higher at highway speed, so the auto does actually get better MPG, but I wouldn't trade it. Once you get accustomed to it, you will like it.

Good question. I only have 2400 miles on mine. I have owned a few rangers, mustangs, and various other manuals and gotten over 150k out of them. It all depends how you treat them. I baby mine, and they last a long time. With that low 1st, you shouldn’t have to burn too much on normal starts. To be fair, you probably make up for that with the high reverse (my only complaint with the Taco 6 speeds). I would also like to hear from some members that have a 2nd gen with high miles to see what they are getting before having to replace the clutch.

I replaced my with 134,000 on it, and it still had so life left. I did it because, it was just before my busy work season, and didn't what take a chance on it failing in the middle of it. I do haul about 400lbs. in the bed mostly in city traffic.

Let me know how you like your '14 tacoma, I'm starting to look for and new truck.

The issue is that most people today do not know how to drive a manual. Instant everything is the norm. ;)

I really like it so far. It is not a DD, mainly used for trips, camping, etc. You just have to accept that you are going to have to beef up the rear springs if you plan on putting any weight back there. I bought mine knowing this, with plans to modify it for its intended uses so it was not a problem for me. I would definitely purchase it again if I had to start over.

Love my 6spd. Bought mine second hand, so don't know the previous owners history. I replaced the clutch @ 80k. It wasn't worn, the pressure plate springs broke loose.
I did it myself, and now the Taco and I are really close.

    Shhhh. It's sleeping.

+1 on the Redline, I change my manual trans fluid every 30k. Getting up near 100k on the truck now, it shifts as smooth as silk.

It's easier to change than the engine oil, yet another reason I love my manual!

Love my 2014 6 spd. Yes, 1st is a little low, and 2nd isn't quite low enough to just start in 2nd gear. My first month with it, I got 17 mpg- but after 27 years of driving a 5 spd I kept forgetting about 6th. I trained myself to remember it and got 19.5 mpg last month.

I don't do a lot of highway, mostly secondary roads but I do live in CO. I think a manual does better here because I can be completely out of gear on downhills, and a downhill here could last a couple of hours.

might actually get better mpg if you leave it in 6th on the down hill to keep the engine rpms up so it goes into full fuel cut.

6spd here and love it. it seems like most people get well over 100,000 on the clutch, most likely because its a pickup. they don't get abused like a sports car.

I've put thousands of miles on both platforms and prefer the Manual.

I think the 6spd in the taco gets a bad rap because it could be so much better. The long and the short of it is, its not a forgiving manual. Ive owned 5 manual jeeps, and have driven bmw m5's and porsche's, and my 13 taco is the most finicky to drive.

The other day I tried backing my truck and empty trailer up a driveway. It was next to impossible. truck wants to stall at idle, so I either give it gas, or feather the clutch. Not good.

I love a manual taco, but I wish the execution was better. Especially when the auto gets better gas milage, and is considered bulletproof.

I just got a 6-Spd 2014 V6 dcb replacing a 2007 Ram cummins 6 Spd I like a standard truck the manual works well for me and displays more old school attitude

So far the truck shifts and performs fine......clutch could be a little better....ram had similar issue till I installed a south bend dual plate clutch. We will see with Taco
