Good morning. I ordered a 2014 Toyota Tacoma on 12/27/2013 and the dealer informed me last night that the truck is "at sea" and will arrive with zero miles on it. Do they ship Tacoma's by Sea? I thought they were made in San Antonio TX? Thanks for any information.

As far as I know though, Tacomas built in Mexico are only sold in Mexico. But I could be wrong.

Ask them where it was assembled and where it's coming from. Mexico and TX is where they are built...so why would they ship by sea? Weird.

Maybe the dealers an idiot and thinks they come from Japan.

Have you met a car salesman lately? Had one guy ask me if my truck was turbo'd...... I had a muffler on it, that was all.

They definitely ship some by sea. My 13' TRD OR DC built in Mexico was shipped to port in NJ, and was out at sea on a boat during hurricane Sandy!

There's a major distribution port in NY/NJ where vehicles arrive to get distributed to dealers along the east coast. I was really worried because my truck, that I had waited months for, was listed at port the night hurricane Sandy was hitting NY/NJ, and then my salesman couldn't find out anything about the truck for a couple days after. I saw on the news that thousands of vehicles at port were damaged by the hurricane. However, a couple days later I learned that the boat my truck was on was due to come in the exact day Sandy was hitting, and they sent the boat back out to sea to float around in the ocean until the storm passed.

It's probably cheaper to ship them by boat to the east coast, with the the golf currents already flowing in that direction, to get them up to the distribution hub in NY/NJ where they are then loaded onto trucks and driven a much shorter distance to dealers.

Well I guess they could truck them to Houston, put them on a ship and take them off in Alabama, and then truck them to your dealership. That might work. OP lives in AL. Trucks are made in TX. Both states have ports. Maybe the Salesman is right.

The VIN starts with a 3, so it looks like the truck will be from Mexico.

By sea from Mexico would be weird, since they would have to go all the way to the Panama canal.

I assume this is a special order. What options are you getting? Did they give you an expected delivery date? I ordered a 2014 DCLB on 1/2/2014. Since I live in San Antonio I hope it doesn't end up on a ship :)

Nope, they are made in Mexico and San Antonio now.

A lot of them go through a port in California.....never really thought about how they got there. Guess it could be by boat.
