I don't care either. They only started using these a few years ago. The headrest only moves a couple inches and research shows it does not work on people who's heads are higher or lower than the headrest itself. So my point is it only helps very little and only if your head is aligned.

I know what bar you're talking about. If I have no lumbar support at all this bar or whatever it is digs into my lower back. I have my seat with the lumbar support all the way out. That seems tto resolve the issue. On a side note I'd like to mention that these seats are probably some of the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in. Not complaining though, I love my truck and everything about it. The stiff seats and tight suspension always put a smile on my face because they're their to remind me I'm still driving a truck :)

Hey ice, take a look at our other posts. I removed the whip lash mec from the bottom and it's very nice now!! A couple other guys did the same and they love it!! The mec does not do much, my guess is the Feds made them do it...

Haha so that's what keeps poking me in the back. I kinda feel like a wuss cause I worry about insurance paying if they found out about this. How much does it tear up the seat cloth or does it field right back in?

It takes less than 10 min. To remove. Two 10mm bolts and your done. Does nothing to the seat. Try it you will be shocked how much better your seat will be!!

What'd you guys do with the actual mechanism, just cut the cable or find somewhere to tuck the whole thing out of the way?

I've been having chronic lower back pain right in the middle of my tailbone/back area since I got my truck and it's this damn bar that's been causing most of the aggravation. My wife's brand new 4runner has the same thing.

The 'cure' in these new safety features is worse than the sickness, I believe. Chronic back and neck pain (at least in my case) from the seats and active head restraints vs. statistical probability of actually being in a rear end crash.

I did not cut mine I removed the pin and took the lower piece out. It was killing my back, but now it's very nice to sit in... Some people think I'm nuts for doing it but it only moves the headrest 1.5 inches and it only works if the headrest is aligned on center with your ears. Sounds nuts but look in your manual it's true. So I thought I would rather have comfort than a rear end crash... I could almost bet the seats were the same years ago before this system was put in and people were fine, the government made them add this crap for extra protection...

I put the rear seat headrest on my driver side, anyways. It made me sit like a question mark.

Great success! This plus the 1 inch spacers is like having a new seat. Didn't cut mine and couldn't get the pin loose so I let it hang and covered it with the seat back.

I was driving to work the next morning after purchasing my truck and I felt something gouging into my lower back. I felt the seat and I was wondering wtf this piece of metal was. Now I know.

Since then I install 2 spacers(washers) on the back supports that raised my bottom seat angle up 3/8" and my issue is solved. For me, changing the angle made a huge difference.
I also installed Clazzio seat covers and my seats are super comfortable.

That's great!! I think I was the first to do this? I'm glad it's helping people! My truck only had 300 miles on it when I took the seat apart. I've been a master tech for 23 years and I told the techs at Toyota about this and they said they do the same thing to there personal trucks but can't to the customers...

I was trying to pull the pin holding the cable in place until I realized that I will never re-install these (both front seats), so, I just cut the cables. My back appreciates it. Thanks to whoever figured this out and posted about it. I started out in cars without seat belts, so, all the safety devices in every vehicle these days give me a warm & fuzzy feeling without this pain in the back.

You have a thread somewhere with a write up? I didn't think they'd fit.

At the risk of sounding redundant, is this mechanism in both front seats? My wife has complained about a bar stabbing her in the lower back from day one. I only noticed discomfort on long drives. Of course the drivers seat has the lumbar adjustment which helps a little but the passenger does not. So would this still help her? Btw, Crom you sir are the man. I followed some of your mods under piercedtigers cheap/free mods and love them. Dont know how you figured out some of them but certainly glad you did.

How do you open the seat? Just rip the black fabric underneath?
