Compared to the smaller Ford 3.7 V6, the 1GR-FE is 69 horsepower and 14 lb-ft short. Toyota makes a great truck engine, but they need to be competitive in horsepower without sacrificing the torque curve.

The 1GR-FE is a nine year old engine that is losing its competitive edge in horsepower and fuel economy. If Toyota doesn't have a direct-injection replacement with higher horsepower and better fuel economy in the works, their shareholders should be marching on them with lit torches...

I was cruising at 80 on the highway yesterday, A/C blowing, 105 degrees out, and on some of the steeper hills it would unlock, and then downshift.

My wife happens to drive a scion XA. Toyota created scion to shed their stereotype of making "boring" vehicles. Scion is geared towards the younger set and so far, they have made some pretty innovative and cost effective vehicles. The coolest thing is that scion allows you to "customize" to your wants/needs right from the factory. And the prices are a true value for what you are getting.

    I would never own one.

However...I'd buy an all electric plug-in Tacoma in a heartbeat. And I'd consider a Hybrid.

I think there is no diesel for several reasons but the main one is the gov. The emission standards here are way worse than Europe. The diesels here are all choked up with bullshit to get them as clean as the gov wants them. Because of this diesels cannot compete mileage wise to get consumers to want to pay extra for one. The mileage suffers big time with all that crap on them. Just look at the full size diesels from a few years back. Way better gas mileage. Also there is a lot of people here that have a bad taste for diesels. They think they all stink and are dirty and the maintenance is too much. Lastly, diesel fuel is more expensive than gas. All these things and probably more tell Toyota it's not worth bringing the diesel here.

Why would you ever want an all-electric truck??

I'd consider a hybrid, but never all electric. Electricity isn't made from rainbows and sunshine and the ratio of drive time vs. recharge time would be a huge deterrent for me (unless they make some serious leaps in battery technology).

Weight reduction and direction-injection 4.0L V6 with 300 hp would get me to upgrade. :)

The last thing you want in your Toyota is a Subaru designed/built flat four. Trust me.

Trucks need torque. The Tacoma 4cyl makes more torque than the FR-S'.

Not sure how you are substantiating your opinion. The european Union is now more severe on emissions that we are. Do you actually own a diesel(Common Rail)? My A3 TDI has an abundance of torque and gets an honest 45MPG on a trip and my dad's Dodge makes 800lb/ft with "all that US smog crap" on it. The A3 2.0L runs so clean that it doesn't even have an adblue system.
There is a huge amount of us that wish for a BIG Diesel 4X4 but don't like the $55,000 price. An efficient and powerful Diesel Tacoma would sell off the hook. Honda and Toyota have Diesels that would not currently require adblue either which are super efficient and powerful.

    1. Toyota knows how many diesel light trucks(dodge, Ford, Chevy) are on the road and that they are thought of as THE trucks on the road when it comes to towing and power by the US truck buying population. They are no longer smelly dirty or huge.
    2. VW/Audi has been quietly selling as many TDI's as they choose to bring here every year at over sticker much of the time(super resale value cars!).
    3. Toyota would have no problem complying. I would be willing to pay up to $4,000 more for huge torque and slightly better fuel economy.
    4. It would take about a month to bring the dealer network up to speed.
I sell Porsches and we are doing training(service dept too) in August for launch of the Cayenne Diesel in September. When an engine fails it generally gets replaced instead of fixed anyway.

The 4 cyl would not be a bad motor if it only had a turbo for the upper revs.. I traded mine out for a V6 once I had abused it for a few weeks.

they weigh a lot more, but it's not going to "dig down" if you put proper tires on it.

Also the current engines are fine, they just need to make the trucks smaller.

Other threads have mentioned that the new Tacoma won't be until 2016 model year. Some guy said he was a supplier and being requested for proposal on parts.

So if you get a 2013 now, you're good for at least 2, to 2.5 years.
