Just bought a 2014 Tacoma TRD 6Speed four days ago with 8k miles. I have read about the 2nd gens having clunky shifting and it gets better with time, I just wanted to verify with some people that this is normal at this milage still.... obviously I don't know how previous owner drove it, but I did purchase straight from dealer and im assuming they would not sell me a broken Taco. It goes into gear just fine, it just seems to clunk as I release the clutch after going into 1st 2nd n 3rd this happens about 50% of the time.... recommendations? Give it time to break in? Aftermarket parts that wont void warranty to install? take it back?

Drive it like a truck, not a sports car. Shift slow. There's a ton of threads on the 6spd. MT. I have no issues with mine

Not complaining, it runs fine. Just hear it shifting into gears kinda hard somtimes. Honestly it shifts smoother at higher rpms than lower

Yeah 2.5k+ she's fine. Anything lower I have to baby the clutch out.

On my 2nd 2GEN, 6MT. It is a truck, and is different from others I have driven, but I do not have any issues with it in any way.
I do know that the release point of the clutch is close to the floorboard.
Make sure your seat is adjusted correctly for full depression.
I think you will get used to it.
    I love mine.

Kk. I've always drove Ford, n I recently got rid of my Ford n came into some money, I bought my Tacoma outright. N I been reading all about it n overall toyota is number one. As far as keeping their value and dependability, I just wanna make sure this is normal... Before my full refund period expires

    Phil,
Never fuss over money, or it will elude you.
Trust your gut, you bought it, hope for the best.

I felt the shifting was clunky until I got my Short shifter. Well worth the $300.

My new 2015 is the complete opposite of your truck, the release point is all the way at the top. I really don't care for it that far up, gonna ask the Dealer if they can adjust the pedal.

Take your time with it. It's not the easiest transmission to grow accustomed to and I've had a number of manuals. It doesn't drive like a German sports car because, well...., it isn't one. I bought my '14 new and it took about 15,000 miles to get smooth. Now it's fine. Work on your shift technique; don't grab the shifter and cram it in quickly. Use the palm of you hand to push the shifter into place. You'll find that with steady palm pressure, it just snaps into place. I get a clunk sometimes in the transmission and othertimes it's the backlash in the drive train. The throttle hang doesn't help. But, you do get used to it. One big improvement was replacing the shift knob with a TRD knob. I found the extra weight improved the shifting action immensely.

I can agree with Krogen, just a bit of nudging. You do need to find what is comfortable for you.
I find that above 2500 rpm works well, there are differences in behavior at various rpm's.
2500-3500, smoothest. I know ther are needs outside of this, just feel it out.
If it helps, My hand is palm up when moving lever towards dash, roll over on the pull towards you.
Just me, works. I do have plans for a short shifter kit. Good luck.

P.S. Clutch release point is only adjustable to a certain limit.
Seems to not be something that is easily nailed.

Never had issues with mine. I shift mine like I'm driving a semi (never driven one though). The problem is the tacoma is not a vw, civic or integra. Shift it like a truck.

Its going back to the dealer tomorrow for another issue but I will be asking them about the clutch catching all the way to the top.

Good idea to always mention little things that bother you, just to have for "the record".
I always make sure these are included on the service order, and if they can't find an issue, at least it is documented.
99% of the time these trucks run as designed. Small anomalies do occur.
Tacoma owners do seem to be more intuned to little imperfections.
    Good luck, keep us posted.
