    Friends,

After a 2 hour drive I stopped off at home depot and experienced some trouble when I tried to start my Tacoma. It started the first try but there was no power when I hit the gas,w it idling rough and, stalled out. Tried it again, and was able to get rolling, but there was no power when I hit the gas. If I kept my foot on the gas, the rpm would surge up and then drop again (or stall). I tried to limp it home, but it died, and would no start after a mile.

    I'm getting the following codes:

    P0301
    P0171
    P0174

Do you have any ideas what the issue may be?

I'm not that good of a mechanic.
I do my own oil changes and have changed out water pumps, starters, etc.
But as far as diagnosing engine problems with these new fangled vehicles, I honestly couldn't say.
Hopefully someone else here on TW can answer.

Out of gas. No fuel pressure. Check fuel pump.

The first thing I would do to try to get out of the woods is clean the MAF - mass air flow sensor. Go to an auto parts store and buy a can of CRC Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner. This "might" help with the 71/74 code. The 0301 code "might" be a faulty ign. coil bank 1(passenger side) - cyl. #1 - the one closest to the front. This would be a 6 cyl. arrangement.

You might want to indicate what size motor you have - 4 cyl or 6 cyl.

In the end, it requires diagnosis.

Based on the symptoms and those codes, I would definitely start by verifying the fuel pump.

Do like others have suggested. Clean the MAF sensor and check fuel pressure. A failing fuel pump can cause your symptoms and codes. Also check the condition and wiring to the fuel injectors.

If the gas gauge reads 1/4 tank and it’s been awhile since you filled up, put some gas in it. There have been plenty of TW members that have run out of gas when the gauge still shows 1/4 tank.

Both banks running lean seems to indicate problem is with fuel delivery and/or fuel pressure. First thing I would do is put an in-line pressure gauge at the rail and see what you have there, I believe it should be around 47psi but don't quote me on that I would have to look it up to be sure.

Same kinda thing just happened to my 09. Take the battery loose for about 10 minutes or so and let the computer reset. Then hook it back up and see if itll fire up and get you home. Then clean the throttle body and maf sensor. That helped mine. Something cheap to try before throwing parts at it.

Thanks dustinJ, I tried it. Didn't work this time. But a new fuel pump has her running like a top.

Aux back up lights, Bed lights, Re-located trailer plug, Good dooby, a.k.a. jumper cable mod, Heated seats, back up camera,
Vacuum leaks. Cracked, loose, disconnected hoses. A can of carb cleaner sprayed on the hoses will find it in there's one.

Check the throttle body. Make sure it's tight to the plenum. And that the air box clamp is tight.

Have you ever cleaned the throttle body? If not, no time like the present... Same with the MAF. Buy their specific cleaners.
The butterfly in the TB is motor/gear driven. I don't move it when cleaning. I spray and use a small piece of cloth with a small screwdriver to get into the nooks.
The MAF has what looks like a uvula on one side of it. It is rather fragile. You do not want to touch it with anything but you do want to spray it down liberally. As for the cylindrical thing next to it, I spray inside of it and then shake it out and wait five or so minutes and the spray will have evaporated.

Some people disconnect the battery when doing this, I do not. When I reassemble and start the truck it idles rather High and will then drop down in stages until it reaches the target idle. The way I see it, that is due to removing the buildup in the throttle body that was restricting airflow and the ECM compensating. Now it's gone.

    Good luck.

Well how bout that. Someone much smarter than I on here said it's unlikely the fuel pump. Glad you got it fixed. Did you do it or have a shop do it?

It's a Denso pump. My brother and I swapped it in. Moved the bed instead of dropping the tank. It was a peice of cake.

Assuming your fuel level is good and you have confirmed there aren't any vacuum leaks then the fuel pump is failing. They are garbage on 2012 and up Tacos. Ask me how I know.
