I heard that the TRD Supercharger kit will be replaced with a TRD Rocket Booster kit, that uses diesel instead of rocket fuel. :spy:

I was in the diesel camp too. However I feel with some of the advancements with gas engines they can deliver similar performance without the high up front premium. Along with the price differential between gas and diesel it would wipe out the fuel economy savings.

The 9 year old Toyota 4.0L makes more torque, but is slightly less efficient than the 1 year old Penstar 3.6L.

    End of the world ensues.

I understand the 4.0L is very old and therefore the Tacoma is past due for a new engine and transmission.

I wouldn't say "slightly less efficient" the RAM 1500 has ~1,200 lb higher curb weight and is still achieving higher fuel economy. Ram 1500 highway fuel economy is ~20% higher with ~30% higher curb weight!

You can forget about 4wd and being able to haul/tow anything more than your Tacoma.

Edit: not to mention the vehicle being durable past the warranty period.

I'm not looking for any more capability than my current Tacoma. Again I wouldn't even consider a full size truck, and definitely not RAM! I'm just stating a full size truck shouldn't be handily beating a mid size truck in fuel economy.

I don't expect the Avalon to have much better fuel economy than the Corrolla and it doesn't....similar comparison.

In reality, it's apples and oranges, Toyota has legendary quality with better than average mpg's. Rams have awful quality and has only compared to toyotas mpg the last couple of years, so we haven't seen the long term effects of their changes to improve gas mileage, my gut tells me that quality is being sacrificed to make mpg's go up.

I'd take an all electric plug-in over a diesel any day.

and I'm not bitchin'...love my Tacoma, just don't like stopping for gas.

would a 2 speed rear-end not solve a good bit of the mpg conundrum, like keep the 3.73 towing/city driving and also have a 3.23 or something for highway. its roughly 14% higher gears which would yield (theoretically) 25 mpg up from 22 with the current set up and if another gear was added to the tranny one could assume another 5% ish making that number 27.5? direct inject for the addition 1.3 mpg needed?

    Too few to list.
I heard they were gonna be nuclear powered thus eliminating the need for gas.

Looks like a Prius got rear ended by a Subaru Brat.

No, we don't need a 2 speed rear end in a Tacoma. It would kill ground clearance and just isn't necessary. The benefit of the 2 speed rear end is so that you can essentially double the number of gears without doubling the size of the transmission. With 5 speeds, the auto Tacoma has plenty of gears (although is still geared a little low for highway speeds IMO). I'd rather see a slightly wider gear range in the transmission vs. another gear and certainly wouldn't want a 2 spd rear end.

wouldn't a wider gear range be bad for city driving since, if the gears were farther apart, you would have to drive longer than you do now in a lower gear to reach the next gear resulting in higher rpms and lower city MPG? and they could just give a bit more lift to compensate for ground clearance right? or just mount the tranny a little higher, sacrificing a little leg room in center back seat and maybe little less bed depth? it would be cool IMHO to have like 4.10s and 3.23 combo acceleration, would be pretty sweet with those low gears and still wouldn't sacrifice mpg when needed.
It just seems like the most logical way to get higher Hwy mpg without giving up performance.
oh and maybe stock headers like on the tundra ha
