Code was giving maf sensor went to auto zone and bought one for 89.00 and still throwing the codes for it, took it to mechanic and they ordered one from auto zone too same one to make sure it wasn’t defective but neither was defective and still throwing 9 codes for the maf sensor, they now tell me it could be a drive in computer gone bad that is making it throw the code for the maf sensor? Should I have bought an oem maf sensor and not a cheaper version?

Probably, these trucks typically throw a fit with non OEM parts. How is the air filter and the throttle body. Any air leaks?

From what they could see no air leaks, he bought a brand new air filler for intake as told which still did the same thing which was when in reverse backing up it would start to go then spitter and stall, then they told him to unplug the maf sensor reset battery and plug all back in, then it acted like it didn’t want to stay started. So we had a code reader and still showed maf sensor so I went to auto zone purchased an 89.00 one they put it on which then it would run, but intake wasn’t doing what it does and stayed started but then only get up to speed of 15-20 mph? So I had it towed to mechanic and they of course ordered the same one I just bought and said it still throws the maf sensor codes up then he tried to tel me that it could be a drive gone bad in computer but I wouldn’t think that would do that for computer?

I can’t see paying to replace the computer when nothing else is wrong but those codes for maf sensor?

Maybe the crank shaft position sensor... that thing plays a role in a lot of weird issues on these trucks.

Would this cause the codes for maf sensor to come up?

My 2000 Tacoma didn't like anything but Denso parts when it came to sensors (MAF, O2, knock, and even spark plugs). I nearly, almost always buy Toyota OEM parts now because I know they work and work for a long time and, to me (and maybe the next owner) that's worth the added cost.

Yeah the mechanic got another one just like the one from same auto zone, where do I get an oem maf sensor? Another question is when we did replace it with generic one it did stay started but wouldn’t go over 15-20 mph and the intake wouldn’t kick in?

Not sure what you mean by "intake wouldn't kick in" but your Toyota dealer will have it if you have to have it *now* (and pay retail) or online Toyota dealears will have parts heavily discounted. There are some great dealers in the vendors section here on TW. Amazon and Ebay have Denso/Toyota parts but you have to pay attention and make sure they are genuine.

So tomorrow I will go to the Toyota dealership and get an original OEM maf sensor and take it to the mechanic to put on, hopefully that will solve the issue and as to it possibly being the computer doesn’t make sense being when we put new one in it stays started but now wouldn’t go over the 15-20mph? So thinking the generic one fixed some of the issue but the computer doesn’t like the generic one?

Does anyone else think the TPS sensor went haywire when his MAF went out? I have seen this on older Mazda's. Not sure about Toyota's though.

Would this still throw codes for a maf sensor?

I dunno. Maybe. Like I said, that was on a 1999 Mazda. Dumb question on my part but did you have the code cleared from the computer once the MAF was replaced?

Yes assuming the mechanic did but we did also when we changed out the first one?
