So in the market for a newer Tacoma and came across a 2014 TRD sport. The truck is from Oregon and it’s very clean it has 114,000 miles runs good drives good sounds good but when I looked under the oil cap I found the tannish color residue which to me means one of two things, head gasket or short drives. I told the dealer on Monday I would clean the cap and I would like to drive it for a couple hours to see if it would come back, what are you guys think?
    Asking $23500

More than likely short drives. Pull the dipstick too.

A lot of threads on this. Goggle "2nd gen tacoma oil cap sludge" and check out all the results it gives for TW (a lot of times I seem to get more/better results using Google's search instead of TW's). You'll find differing opinions, but I think majority of the folks are going to tell you it's fine and due to condensation/moisture (from short drives).

I pulled the dipstick and took the radiator cap off and both seemed fine no buildup in the reservoir or on the coolant cap. It sounds exactly like my 2013 did the Tacoma light tick. The price didn’t seem too bad considering what’s going on right now, what are y’all think about 23,5k? Kelley blue book was 22,5

No opinion on price other than I hear most vehicles are somewhat overpriced now, due mainly to supply-chain issues.

As stated above, no worries on the residue in the oil cap. If you like the truck, buy it.

Short trip indeed. Cold wheater started 3 week ago and the first week i started to get this under the oil cap. I only drive 2 short trip per day for work and it's under 8 mile for the day.

When the head gasket is bad there so many other sign, rought cold start, white smoke, cylinder misfire, low coolant ect.

Price are crazy... no way to avoid that. The truck seem nice if you like it buy it!

I see you're from Northern Michigan, I'm from Northern Illinois so we have the same climate. The cold weather makes this really prevalent with short drives. If you want to be 100% certain see if they'll let you pay for an oil change and watch them change it- see how the oil looks coming out.

Certain oil brand gave me the same on my 1996. Have not seen it since I changed to supertech.

Well the dealer said I could have it for half a day so I’ll do that just to be sure and I think I’ll buy it after the test drive. That’s for the input guys.

That’s precisely what I got when I started teleworking, and most of my drives became less than 10 minutes. I now go on a nice long drive at least once a week.

Another thing I noticed was when I was looking at the frame which had hardly any rust on it there was a white residue that had been injected into the frame and then caps over the holes I’m assuming that’s some kind of anti-rust

Yep CRC treatment. They brush the boxed section and remove all humidity. They put i think Nox-Rust 712AM inside to protect the frame. They put line of this stuff at specific location under the truck too where the metal channel are welded together.
