The battery in my 2015 access cab 2.7L base model Tacoma measures 10" in length.

The tray 'might' hold a battery 10.25" long. It clearly won't hold anything longer.

The battery sticker says Toyota, made by Johnson Controls and states Group 24F.

Here's the mystery part. The BCI size charts say 10.75" for a group 24F. All the 24F batteries that I've seen measurements stated for are from 10.6" to 10.9" long. If that's so, none will fit this tray.

It appears to me the OEM battery is in fact a longish version of a Group 35 with a bogus Group 24F sticker. Why have an industry standard then?

There are sources on the net that claim the Tacoma Base 2.7 takes a 24F, and others that state a 35.

    Any similar experiences?

The battery is bigger at the top where the top cap is glued on. That’s where the dimensions are measured.

This one is only 1/4" longer on the top part. The 24F spec is 3/4". Unless the replacement batteries are half an inch wider at the top they still won't fit.

I may brave the covid and go to a store and actually measure one. If they will allow me to do that... I'm not sure batteries are actually displayed these days.

Batteries aren't standardized like they used to be years ago. Now it's a 'nominal' size.. close, but no cigar. Next post says it all.

Many batteries have a plastic handle that makes the top longer. Hence the longer published dimensions. You're way overthinking this.
