OP. I had test drove a Colorado and a buddy bought one, a z71 2wd. I got my Tacoma after not liking the Colorado. It just feels cheap and look like a equinox. Anyhow. After I pulled up to work for the first time in my Tacoma, my buddy pulled up with his Colorado. You can see the difference in build quality from the exterior and interior. You can't compare the two. You just can't. My friend now regret's buying a Colorado.

it goes w/out saying on this site but I'M TACO TIL I DIE!! i had a 2011 access cab trd OR that i put 90k on in 2 yrs and never saw a single check engine light or any other warning light. a yr and a half ago i made the move to a 2015 DCLB, 37k and running, still no waqrning lights of any kind!! i've heard stories about cummins, duramax, etc that are in and out of the dealer for campaigns, warranty check engine lights, they don't run right, and they are not even past 10k..

I will say the Colorado's transmission shifts a ton too; however that damn delay/lag was the deal breaker for me. Almost felt downright dangerous.

I was driving my uncle's truck and came close to being rear ended. I figured 306 hp wouldn't have any problems merging onto the highway. When I got back to the house the first thing he asked me was "did you feel a delay when accelerating with my truck?" I guess he didn't want to acknowledge the problem either.

The standard answer on here for everything seems to be that it just isn't broken in yet and after you reach XXXX Miles the Transmission will be fine and your MPGs will go way up, so maybe his truck just isn't broke in yet.

This is true.My 2005 GMC sierra was a total POS,the 2008 was not.Almost identical trucks, but the 2008 had the 4.8 and did as well as the 5.3.

Very strange that gm didn't put the new 4.3 in the Colorado. 285hp and over 300tq. That's a super nice power plant and been used sense the s10 so it should be nearly bulletproof. Maybe it doesn't get the mpg that the other engine does. So instead, they throw a car engine into it..

Just remember to factor the starting points.

It's pretty easy to get $4500 off MSRP on a GMC Canyon without lifting a finger. I'd expect more discount is available with a bit of work. With a Tacoma, $3000 off a TRD is doing very well (or at least it was in September).

Resale Values are based from the MSRP, so if you think about being able to get $4500 off in the beginning then you are really doing good.

    1. Carcomplaints.com is a joke of a site.
    2. Colorado is fugly.

I see the government has been buying white Colorados and they just look awful.
Typical generic work truck with zero sport look.

I am glad you brought this up as someone here did the math like this before to debunk that. Using the link that Chuck posted shows at 36 Months the Tacoma at 72.9% and the Canyon at 70.7, lets say that the Tacoma and Canyon both have an MSRP of $40,000 and you can get $4500 off the Canyon and $3,000 off the Tacoma. That means you save $1,500 in the beginning on the Canyon and at 36 Months the Tacoma is worth $29,160 and the Canyon $28,280, so the Tacoma is better by $880 and the end result is the Canyon costs $620 less over that time frame.

I don't see how they could figure it out any other way other than using the MSRP as they would have no idea what each transaction price is.

I don't have figures at hand, but seriously, people aren't complete idiots. When a dealer (example howardbentleyauto.com) advertises brand new Canyons at $4500+ below MSRP, a buyer is going to have to be a moron to buy a three year old used truck and not factor in the price of a brand new one.

When I was shopping trucks, I had ~$5000 below MSRP quotes from the mentioned dealer on SLT AT package Canyons and was still $3-4k below what I paid for my Tacoma at ~$3k below MSRP. I bought based on fitment-to-needs not price, and the Taco did what I wanted better than the Canyon. My point is that for a price-based buyer, the higher discounts on the GM twins will echo into the resale and value retention. Used GM twins were pretty easy to find, used Tacos in the config I wanted simply didn't exist at a reasonable price and mileage. It literally made more sense to buy new.

Of course, regional market conditions will vary.
