As the title suggests, I bought a new Tacoma (4.0L, 2wd, DCSB, TRD sport) in late January and so far have gotten between 15-16 mpg with mixed city/hwy driving and being very conservative with the accelerator.

Is this normal or should I be concerned? I have a '97 4runner, albeit a 3.4L, that averages 20-21 mpg and I was expecting at least similar performance from the new taco... thoughts?

Give it time to break in too. Your engine is still new.

Give it a little time to break in. The variety you see in reported MPGs is mostly based on ppls driving habits. Dont worry about MPGs until after your first oil change. After that start checking and if your like me, start adjusting your driving to see just how how high you can get those illusive MPGs.

I have a new DCLB 2015 SR5 4wd 4L with < 2k miles. Mileage per fill-up has varied from a low of 13 (largely in-town, bitter cold) to a high of 20 (secondary roads, snowstorm for 1/2 the ride, avg speed of 45 mph). One highway tank, 70-75 mph, 17 mpg. Overall, 16+ mpg in mixed driving. I am pretty light on the throttle, and hoping it will improve as well.

My 2015 DCSB 4x4 TRD Sport is doing ok. I have 4600 mi and the worst I have got was 16.7 (mostly around town) and the best has been 19.7 (mostly 4 lane highway). I try to keep it around 2000 to 2100 rpm's .

its going to take some time to break in.... and cold / winter gas are not helping.

hell i just went up 1.5mpg from last week to this week due to the weather being a solid 30* warmer

I've got less than 1,700 on my 2015 Tacoma DCLB 4x4. My worst tank so far was 17.58mpg. Best so far is 19.67mpg. Most of my commute is 55-70mph with few stop lights. I did install a K&N Air Intake at 837 miles though.

This last tank of gas was 18.88 mpg. I'm pretty soft on the pedal too. I can't tell you the last time my RPM's went over 3,000.

My drive home tonight on the interstate was into the wind. The air drag on these Tacomas must be pretty significant! Pushing 75-80mpg into the wind took some effort. lol

Oh, BTW. I only fuel up at one specific gas station that uses 87 Octane. Most of the gas stations in my area are 85 Octane. This can make a difference in how rich the engine has to mix the fuel.

2013 DCLB 4X4 TRD Sport--- 18.5 MPG winter, 20-21 MPG summer... I got a small bump in MPG after 2000 miles. Never had 15 MPG EVER, not even with a full tank driving in 4X4 in the mountains during the winter.

I am having the same problem. I bought a 2015 DCLB V6 2wd TRD Sport in December and am consistently getting 15-15.5 mpg. I drive conservatively and in the past have gotten better than epa estimates with cars. I'm mostly driving around town, keep the RPMs below 2000, no fast starts. The truck had 400 miles when I bought it (delivered from another dealership out of state). It now has 1500 miles. I know it's not a Prius but was hoping to get 17 mpg in town. Just want to make sure there's nothing wrong with the truck. I read about resetting the ecu by disconnecting the battery for 30 min. Should I try this, or give it more time, or call the dealer? Thanks for your help.

When I first got my 2014 TRD Offroad 4x4 it was at about 16 to 16.5.
After about five months it improved to 17 to 17.5.

My 2014 TRD OR 4x4 had horrendous gas mileage for the first few thousand miles (14.5-15.5mpg regardless of city/hwy). I'd read the threads on here as well and used to wonder what the hell was wrong with my truck. It didn't help that I bought it during the winter gas season which doesn't help mpgs as well. Closing in on 10,000 miles now and getting significantly better mpg's (19-21 hwy/16-18 city using 93 octane).

Glad to hear it may just need more time to get the engine broken in. Will the ecu eventually learn my driving habits, or do you need to reset or erase it? Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for the replies all. I'm in Southeast Texas (Houston), so no topography of note, not much of a winter, and the rpm's have only passed 2000 maybe 3-5 times to date - it's seriously been driving Miss Daisy for the duration. I've been gassing with regular octane, at Chevron, but not sure what the dealer loaded with to send me off. I had 9 miles on the odometer when I pulled of the lot with my shit-eating grin.

This is my first new vehicle purchase so I've never had the privilege of breaking one in, but I'll just hope the mpg's will improve with time. The damn truck looks great though, it's almost like dealing with some hot tail... her performance may not live up to the tales, but God bless America she looks good - and it sure feels nice to get in and out.
