With the new penalty rules , you can't get a harsher penalty than starting at the back no matter how many grid spots in penalties you accumulate . Once an engine has been used in a race weekend it can be used in any subsequent race without penalty . By putting a new engine in for Friday , and then another prior to Saturday , they effectively added 2 engines to the number they can use throughout the rest of the year and still only start at the back where they were likely to start anyway

I think there already is an agreement with Mercedes that would only get announced once Red Bull officially drops Renault

 

Wolff just said that they won't get between Renault and Red Bull because Mercedes has a commercial partnership with Renault but that only means they don't want to be seen as a wedge between the two , but they will supply engines to RB once the divorce is official
