2012 with 43000km on the clock, under coated since it came off the lot. Only surface rust I have is on those clamps that toyota put on the rear leaf pack. Frame is fine. You see the odd salt truck in NS :)

I just traded in my 2011 for a 2013. My 2011 had barely any because I took care of it and washed it often during the winter months. My new 2013 had substantially more rust so I worked an under coating into the price.

What Tacoma are you looking at? Give us locals a link, maybe we know the truck. Also, post pictures of the frame, a little rust is expected but not to much.

Thanks Vantage. After looking at a couple of used ones, I'm back to open book as I was disappointed at how others take care of the trucks.

I am thinking new or slightly used as it will be used to often travel back and forth to Vernon in the spring/summer/fall so needs to be reliable and trouble free.

I don't mind a little rust but it's the systemic rust issues where frame rails are failing is what concerns me. When I drive in salty winter conditions (and offroad), I wash under the truck very carefully. My cars I don't care about very much... and just keep the paint clean.

I had previous assumed I wanted an Access cab due to wheel base preference but now thinking of expanding my search to Double cab. Here's one used one but kinda pricey.

I should start a thread on double cab verses access cab and also state my usage plans (requirements) and help me figure out what I want but I suspect there's a million threads on this topic.

I'm very familiar with Land Cruisers but a newbie on Tacos. Any help would be appreciated.

    I'll shoot you a PM.

    Thanks

    Riley

I highly recommend a DC. I had an access 2001 Tacoma and I upgraded to my former 2011 DCSB, the double cab is very useful, also having a 6' box is great for bikes or if you need to sleep in the box ever.

I just bought a 2013 double cab Limited for $35,000 so I think that price is close on the sr5 you listed. If you can get it for 28,000 it is a great price.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Rust issue on Toyota trucks is not supplier issue, by now that is sure thing.
Its a combination of crappy paint job and frame constructed from multiple layers of metal instead of continuous beam.
Toyota "paints" (atleast tries) their frame with powder process, however powder has no way of getting in between metals sandwiched together. Water with salt on the other hand has no problem getting in there and rusting metal.
2-3 years is not a problem, 4+ is where things start turning upside and you dont even see rust eating frame.

    Stock for now...
Just fyi - you stated you're familiar with Land Cruisers , and that's a problem . The Taco is a huge letdown in comparison and you have to understand they are two different animals completely - the Cruisers are built like commercial vehicles instead of a soccer-mom runabout . If you're in Canada , look into finding a left hand drive 75 series pickup - maybe European market as I've seen a few guys showing up on MUD with those . Awesome vehicle and should outlast you easily . The only problem is the price - even used they go for 50% more than a Taco but do have the highest trade in value out there . Wish I could find one and trade out my '08 DCSB - that would be great .
