The past couple of months I've noticed when filling up the gas pumps constantly shutting off. I have tried several different stations and the problem follows. If I just barely open the nozzel on the pump it will eventually fill up.

I noticed a pretty good amount of dirt buildup around the gas cap so I used a pick and shopvac to clean that out. Went to fill up today and it did better. I could open the nozzel about halfway without it shutting off.

I'm certain it's a vent problem, but I'm having trouble finding information on when the vent line is located and how to blow it out. If anyone has any other thoughts on what it might be other than the vent, I'm open to suggestions.

How full is your tank when you’re filling up? Maybe try running the tank as low as you can go and see what happens when you fill up.

I don't fill up unless I'm under a quarter tank

This happens to me sometimes, but only with nozzles that have the rubber ring around it (like the one pictured here). I back the nozzle out about an inch or two. Solves the problem for me.

Don’t feel to left out, there are city’s, and towns in the USA where it’s the law those type of gas pump nozzles are illegal and you have to hold it anyway.

Sounds like an evap issues. Pressure builds as your filling the tank and not releasing causing the nozzle to shut off. Kind of like when you tip a bottle upside down the liquid glugs out but tip it to the side and let some air in at the same time the liquid pours smoother, faster and no glug glug.

There's a little vent hole on the tip of the nozzle's spout (bottom side) . Are you sure you are not blocking this little vent hole by resting it against the wall of your filler tube when you insert it? Just back out the nozzle a little bit

I service gas dispensers, and it's a common source of customer issues with nozzles

this rubber ring you are talking about is to retain and prevent fuel vapors from escaping. Doubles as a splash guard too. Though if you let it seal too tight, it will block aiflow and cancel vent, shutting off the nozzle. It's like when emptying a bottle of water, air must get in, because if not, water is not going to come out, as there is no air to push it out

pull the nozzle out an inch when you fill and don't let that gasket seal.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Do you top your tank right to the brim when filling?

I was also wondering this.. ive read on here this can also be caused by charcoal canister problems.. which is sometimes caused by topping off each time

You should have a seperate vent for filling. The charcoal canister should not affect that. Look under your truck, there will be two hoses going directly from the tank to the filler neck, the wide one will be the fill and the small one is the vent. When you have the gas cap on it will block the vent and then all venting is put on the charcoal canister. Check the small tube first to make sure its not kinked, if not then pull the small tube off the tank, might be a small hose clamp on it and blow compressed air through it. That way the air is blowing out towards the cap. If you had dirt buildup in the filler area there is a chance it got inside the vent tube

And for those of you who want to get around this, wedge your gas cap into the handle to hold it open.

This happens to me...but only at a certain gas station which I find weird. I've tried every pump at the station and they all do it, but it's only ever happened at that specific station.

I figured it had something to do with the way they calibrate their pumps. I usually try it a few different times, pulling it out a bit, pushing it in a bit, and eventually it goes.

The filler neck should have its own separate vent

How sure are you about that?

If it has a separate vent, perhaps that passage is clogged?
