Article that explains why idling isn't good for your engine. This really has been known for a long time.

    http://www.sciencealert.com/the-big...nter-is-doing-your-engine-more-harm-than-good

We spoke with mechanical engineer and former drag-racer Stephen Ciatti about the pervasive myth that you need to warm up your car in the winter.

For the last 26 years, Ciatti has worked on combustion engines – engines that generate power from burning fuel, like gasoline – and currently oversees all of the combustion engine work at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.

To get straight to the point, Ciatti said that idling your car in the cold not only wastes fuel, but it’s also stripping oil from critical components that help your engine run, namely the cylinders and pistons.

I wasn't expecting amazing mileage, but being in 2 wheel drive and not gunning it, I did expect higher than 14.6. I'm sure quite a few people don't recall lower prices. Hell, I remember when people freaked out when it went from $1/gal to $1.25! (way back when)

Thanks! I did some research as well this weekend and found similar info. Looks my warm up time is probably the culprit. I'm going to change that routine and see what happens.

Isnt almost all gas ethanol blended regardless of "winter gas"? There is like 1 or 2 stations near me that have gas w/o ethanol and thats only if u buy premium....

I don't think I'm going to give much thought to an article that has a dude with his hand in his pocket "pushing" a car as a pictorial.

Depends entirely on what part of the country you live. In the north east ALL gas is ethonal, it's a state standard. Most other places in the us have both, except maybe california?

Around here, mpg drop happens in late October when it's often still pretty warm out. I see a significant decrease before I start doing longer warm ups due to weather.

Right. And if any state has non-ethanol gas its usually premium, correct?

Thats why im confused on the winter gas sucks, run non-ethanol thing.

Its not like June hits and all the gas stations have non-ethanol gas. Its always there regardless of season if U wanna pay for premium.

I am going to agree that your 14.6mpg, if legit, is bad.

Did u do your own calculation not including the "dealer fill-up"?

In Washington we have non ethanol fuel in regular and premium. I run non ethonal when I can and get better mileage when I do. I have done the math before and the increased price for non e fuel pencils out to be a better deal considering the increased mileage and they say it's better for everything in you engine.

NOT TRUE - take a look at www.pure-gas.org - stations in CT ME NH NY NJ MD VA PA RI - looks like every state in the North East except Delaware. Not a state standard as you stated. Some may be marinas and airports, but if you look, it is available. Now, whether it's worth the price difference is a different discussion.

I didn't say it's NOT available, but I've never once seen non-ethanol anywhere, ever. For the entire state of MA there are only 17 "pure gas" stations.
Here's a link that explains in a picture what I was trying to say: https://www.afpm.org/uploadedFiles/Content/Our_Members/What_We_Make/Fuels/US-Gasoline-Map(1).pdf

This is partly because people see different results depending on where they live. I get 18 mpg pretty much year round and have never seen much difference at all between the seasons.

The benefit is your truck isn't cold as fuck when you get in. But yes, waste of gas. Just depends how long you like to be in a freezing cold truck.

Someone posted a link around here not too long ago to an article explaining why letting an engine sit idle is actually detrimental to engine longevity.

@House Forsaken don't know if its been mentioned to you yet or not. Switch to 89 octane.

My truck runs like garbage on 87. Especially winter blend 87.

The 4.0 is actually tuned for 89 octane, though most people never notice it.

I picked up mileage and throttle response as soon as i got all the 87 out of the fuel system. Might help your case too.

Nope, non-ethanol is usually low octane. Just priced like premium or higher. Refiners use ethanol as an octane boost. Boat requires premium and when I find non-ethanol it is only in regular and I have to buy separate octane boost. In Texas ethanol requirements vary by county. It is mandated by EPA in "clean air counties" just like tougher inspections are. It is all of the larger metro areas. There is about a 6 county area around DFW where ethanol is mandated. I have to drive outside that area to find non-ethanol.

Just throwing in my 2 cents, I have a 2012 trd sport, no lift, supercharger, and bfg kos and I get 14-15 as well :/ Always been like that even before the supercharger so I've just excepted it.
