You may be on to something about the Variable Cylinder Management being a culprit though.
It sticks oil wiper rings on the cylinder that deactivates. Many people get it freed up again and use a variable resister to disarm the system, fooling it into running at 165 degrees after warm up.

I have one on my Honda. Now it just sucks gas like a Toyota

edit: I looked up the engine. This one doesn't use VCM but does have VTEC. Maybe someone told you different? I saw where oil dilution IS a big problem with them but really, I've heard a lot of direct injection engines build up gas in the oil if not changed regular. I admit Honda is shyte now compared to the '90s.

The '90s everything was the best they ever were. Toyota included. glad this is in 1st gen.

I remember reading something about disarming it when I was researching the Odyssey for my friend. Tried to find that info again & kept coming up empty. & there you post it.

Not sure they'd even have to take them out to start with. Come to think of it, the bases of the coil boots look tired. The coils had shiny new bolts on them though!

You can tell by the excess gaps and all the leftover debris from the combustion on the electrodes and insulators. Compare them to the plugs you took out of your Tacoma.

From the old engine they replaced .

I would think if this was at the dealer it should have been gone over then who knows .

Maybe the don`t care since they get paid to swap another engine.

I thought they looked like they had a lot of junk on them. This is the stuff the charts don't cover. That's one reason I come here :)

I am going to ask my aunt for the name of the place/person Honda got it from.... See what was supposed to have been done to it (refurbished), if anything. Either way, if it was supposed to remanned or if it was pulled from a boneyard, it started, they threw some shiny bolts on & called it good enough, somebody dropped the ball. & maybe there is nothing in the paperwork that states they did anything more than ensure it ran, they still dropped the ball, ethically. & yeah, I know, I can't help it, I still expect most people to hold themselves to a medium of ethical standards.
So, if all it needs is a good deep tune-up & cleaning & it's not in the paperwork that this should have been done, I can do it. Maybe put in one of those variable registers & she can still get some good miles out of it or sell it (my vote). I'll tell ya what though, as much as I love my truck, being able to take out the plugs without having to take apart half the engine was pretty ok. However, not being able to back over the garage entrance hump/lip/whatever you call it, unless I had a running start (so to speak/couldn't creep), sucked. I'll take my 6 any day.

I'll keep y'all posted & thank you so much for the help.

Gotcha. I thought you meant taking them out of the new/used engine.

I would say it’s not burning fuel efficiently, excess fuel washing down cylinder walls. Probably due to the cylinder shut down system, lots of this type engine had major issues. I wouldn’t own one, get rid of it. I’d question how much less fuel they save for the complexity they add.

How many miles are on your Mom's CR-V? The chassis not the engine.

You are right in your observations.
Just wanted to add that the ashen gray can also show up when the cylinder is running too lean.

Thank you. Weird. When I saw the Earth Dreams logo on my aunt's engine, I thought I'd look it up. Maybe my mind went to the VCM because The K series is having the same probs as the J, which I was already familiar with.

Anyway, Now my brain is about fried as I am trying to figure out just what it is with the K series that has caused so people engine problems. There are lots & lots of complaints. Lawsuits. Yet I can't find tech specifics. Don't get me wrong. I'm not looking to revamp the engine. Just I get on curiosity missions & I'd like to give my aunt an explanation for her troubles. Although her eyes will probably glaze over after a few mins.

low tension piston rings? The fuel delivery? Not questions for you. Just pondering aloud....

Have you checked the numbers to see if it's really been changed?

Ya know, I usually give a mechanic all kinds of slack in rectifying or trust because I think 99% are honest or trying to be but this reeks like your oil.

BTW, you can move this to Gen.Auto in Green Room.

How would I do that? (No stupid questions, right?) Lemme guess - It should be reflected in the odometer via the ecu which would be with the new/used engine?

Good idea.... & how would I do that?

the engine # is stamped on the (prob. front) block. The last 5-6 numbers will match the last numbers of the VIN.

If no match to the serial part of the number, it's been changed.

I was mistaken about moving the thread, only mods can.

Ok. I'll check. I still have it here (at my abode) a week later. This all started with a simple cabin air vent mouse fix....

I did look up the odometer thing & that is a big no.... or NO....

I think I can send a message to ask it to be moved.
