2015 JBL Entune Reboot and Bluetooth Skipping (comprehensive). Need advice.

I know this has been covered here a bunch, but I'm working with my dealer in an attempt to resolve this issue before my warranty is up in June.

I bought the truck in late July of 2017 and was initially on an iPhone 7 Plus, then an iPhone 6s in August and an iPhone X in September. The iPhone 7s and 6s were on iOS 10 and the X on iOS 11. All three had the exact same issue.

1) I've noticed that the music skips sometimes. It's a very small amount, but it's annoying.

2) The head unit randomly reboots. Most of the time this is when I'm listening to music or a podcast and I get a call or make a call. It's very dangerous and frustrating to receive a call and my head unit reboots. I'm left scrambling to pick up my phone and switch it to speaker to let the caller know what is going on. I've also had issues when no music is playing and I do the "hey siri, blah, blah, blah" and the head unit just crashes.

I've had the truck in for service 3 times for this issue. Here's what we've tried so far.

1) I went through all of my contacts (over 600) and removed all "unusual" punctuation. Periods, Commas, etc.

2) Updated the firmware to the newest version

3) Completely deleted my phone from the head unit and re-sync'd it WITHOUT any contact information, texts, email, etc.

4) After the last visit, they said the next step would be to reset my iPhone. To which I say, F that!

Nothing we've done has made the issue any better. Toyota's official stance is that Apple is updating their phone faster than they can keep up with it. I find this a little insulting because I've got over a dozen bluetooth devices around my house and in cars that have zero issues connecting and staying connected to my phone.

Has anyone had any luck getting this issue fixed under warranty? I've already been to a local stereo place to replace the headunit and retain all the steering wheel and backup camera functionality. I was quoted, $1400. Based on my experience with this issue, it sure feels like a hardware issue that cannot be easily fixed without some sort of recall.

 

You'd be lucky if the unit just took a shit before the warranties up. Even if it takes a dump after the warranty is up..It should still be covered, because it was going on during the warranty period and was documented by the dealer.

The units are shit, I have the non JBL navigation unit in my 15. It rebooted a few times while driving, hasn't happened after an update about a year ago. The navi units(at least in the 14-15 corollas) are known for freezing on the reboot screen, I don't know if the ones in the tacomas do the same.

 

I have this same problem with my 2014 Baja Edition. The JBL Entune system reboots at least once almost every time I’m in the truck. I use an iPhone X, now running the latest developer beta iOS. I typically keep Waze running, and I also use an App called VC1 connect that adds filters and voice alerts to my Valentine One radar detector. Both use HFP to broadcast alerts over my audio system. I’ve recently started using a BT connection to play music from my phone, and that makes the crashes more frequent. I likely will be go back to plugging in my IPad Classic to see if I can avoid some of the crashes while I still have the truck. I’m pretty positive that it is the Bluetooth stack in the Entune system that is the culprit. I’ve tried everything, and Toyota hasn’t been helpful. I’m done trying, as you lease is up soon and my 2014 Baja is for sale.
