Truth be told, the stock engine and transfer case are more power than I'd ever need. I've never come to a situation and said, "Man, if I only had more power I could have gotten out." It's always ground clearance or traction.

That being said, I'd love to have a diesel. I generally regard them as being more stout engines anyway. Regardless of whether it's a gasoline engine or a diesel I just hope it's turbocharged. That way there's easy power to be had with minor boltons and tuning.

Somebody should make a 3rd gen section and all these types of topics should go in there.
    Just sayin.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Exactly what he said. On my dad's old 02 Duramax it cost 5k for a new transfer case when the old one went tits up, and that didn't include installation. Diesels are good for towing, but they get to a certain age like that and just start nickel and diming you to death. My dad traded up for an 09, later found out that the transmission was about ready to go in that 02 shortly after he got rid of it. Can't imagine what one of those costs!

everyone talks about a diesel, yet toyota makes the best hybrid available, and they have said they are working with ford to design a hybrid rear wheel drive vehicle... ie truck...

hybrid would be way better IMO, they make sweet torque, and get extremely good city mpg, which is what most of us drive most often.

Love your avatar...I got me one of those dogs!!!

The maintenance on diesels must be adhered to fairly strictly...that is the high point of a diesel as far as it's maintenance. The cost for labor is the difficulty in finding a diesel mechanic who knows what he's doing. But really when you compare it to any other vehicle can't the same be said?

My VW is turbocharged and is rated at a wopping 100hp. But when I step on it to accelerate I get the 100hp after the turbo spools up (about 2-3 seconds later) until it runs out. My reason for diesel is the mileage and as time goes on I'm sure maintenance will also decrease in cost. The germans already have 10,000 mile oil changes listed on their maintenance record upkeeps. $600 for an oil change aint cheap in Germany so they are constantly striving for better maintenance. As far as the diesel hybrid...I'm just not sold on it yet. I'm sure it's okay but I am a little ol fashioned. I can't even imagine the cost to change out a battery pack but each vehicle has there ups and downs. I just like 30-34 MPG. Give me a Toyota that will do that and let me haul something now and again and I'll buy it. And don't forget what the cold weather in the northern states will do to diesel fuel. So each area will have its requirements. I love this discussion.

There are a lot of people on the Jeep forums that think in the same way this forum thinks. Some are saying it is going to come out and others are saying they will never see it.

Time will tell, but this will be the only truck to compete with the Tacoma if it does some out. And it is does come out with the Fiat 2.8 D... I'm sure Toyota will reconsider there 2015 plan, what ever it is.

Transfer case and transmission have absolutely nothing to do with what were discussing.

Hahahahaha That's the funniest thing I've read all day. I think it's preference really. Up until recently nobody made a diesel that wasn't obnoxious and smelly

And the initial investment is a lot higher. (Although it makes up for it in resale value)

Hey fella's! I did a bunch of searching for the 2015 redesign, and I didn't see this link posted anywhere.

    http://www.carsdirect.com/2015/toyota/tacoma

This is the first I have seen of actual numbers. What do you all think?

Good Lord I hope they don't make it physically larger.

Looks like more speculation and bullshit. I couldn't imagine that many options being available for a Tacoma engine. No sources, lots of "should have", etc.

Still 5 and 6 speed transmissions. Toyota still just going with what works. Looks like I'll be keeping my 06 for a very long time. Disappointing really.
