^The new Colorado is heavy. I wouldn't be surprised if the CURRENT Taco with just 236 hp beats it in acceleration (Car and Driver clocked a DCLB at 6.9 sec 0-60 mph, with 15.6 sec in the 1/4 mile).

Colorado is only 44 lbs heavier than the current Tacoma. The next Tacoma will probably be slightly heavier than the current gen. So both trucks will end up weighing about the same.

Toyota better show up with 300 HP or the Tacoma is going to get blown into the weeds.

Some more photos published, including a frame/powertrain mockup:

    • Fully boxed frame (for better or worse...)
    • Steel UCA and LCA (as opposed to aluminum in the Colorado)
    • Sway bar mounts to the LCA, may be easier to disconnect off road.
    • Front shock bucket very low - front suspension travel probably less than the Taco's.
    • Cab mount is far from front tire
    • Exhaust crossover pipe routed aft of the T-case
    • Single-piece driveshaft
    • SUA rear spring arrangement with bottom-swinging shackles
    • Leafs are short with flimsy hangers - rear suspension travel probably less than the Taco's. Front hanger will probably be the first to develop rust. Expect a recall on it after 7 years if no changes are made to the North American version. :D

Front discs are smaller than the Taco's. Rear continues with drums.

New truck is up on Nissan Thailand's web site. First look at other colors, e.g. white:

    http://www.nissan.co.th/Vehicles/NP300-Navara-King-Cab.aspx

Pricing of the 4x4 double cab model with 7-speed auto transmission is equal to about $31000, though it's with the 2.5L diesel.

Apparently it's possible to order the access cab without rear seats?

Additional bits of info from the tech specs http://www.nissan.co.th/~/media/Images/Nissan/Asia Pacific/Thailand/H60A/p-2/EN_double.pdf

4x4 version has 8.7" of ground clearance (Taco is 9.3"). Width is 72.8" (Taco is 74.6").

It does not appear that this truck will be coming to North America.

We'll see. Unlike Toyota, Nissan has never in recent history developed separate lines of mid-size pickups for the N. American and international markets. I suppose they could give the current Frontier a facelift and a new engine, but the result probably won't be competitive.

LOL maybe Nissan is waiting for the free-trade agreement between the US and Thailand to fully come into effect, so they can just build the truck in Thailand at a lower cost than even Mexico. They needed just $115 million to open a second plant in Thailand for the Navara, compared to $500 million - $1 billion it would cost here.

Nissan has kept the prior gen (pre-05) Frontier platform alive in Mexico.
    http://web.nissan.com.mx/frontier-4l/

Going back to a smaller platform could help it become unique and distance itself more as an entry level, low cost truck vs. the somewhat mini-full-size that the mid-size has become.

^I would applaud Nissan for trying this, as the 2nd gen Taco is too large for my needs. However, with all the re-engineering they'd have to do to meet future crash test standards, it might become as expensive as a full-fledged redesign.

The 1st gen Frontier was marginal in crash tests in its day (the Tacoma and Ranger both got "acceptable" ratings):

^If the TTAC article turns out to be true, I would definitely give the smaller Frontier a serious look. I don't think it necessarily makes business sense for Nissan, but whatever. :)

^For the same reason Apple tightly controls info on next-gen iPhones - because it causes some potential buyers to hold out for the next gen.

    Or shop other vehicles.

If a Nissan diesel came out before Toyota said anything about the next hen Taco, I bet there would be a few people jumping ship.

I would, in a heartbeat. I've owned and driven diesel Datsuns/Nissans/Mitsubishis/Toyotas over my old lifetime. Whoever sells the product I need gets my business.

Thanks, Ken. Nissan's stupid indecisiveness led to this, as they should've been planning for this years back. Between their excuse for the Titan needing the year of 2015 by itself, the Frontier and Xterra should've been redesigned already alongside the Navara in late 2015 and the Titan in mid-2014. Any player that phones it in, deserves to fall flat and lose in sales to new and improved competition. I saw spy photos of the new Navara from last year, but the source was too stupid to know better and confused me until the teasers back in June. Nissan is pitiful and so is Toyota to a much lesser degree, for opting to work with a heavy facelift instead.
