A deer decided to end my 2015 at 258,000 miles. Love that truck and still would be driving it otherwise. I found a 2023 off road with less than 7000 miles on it for a great deal. Drove some 2024s but am skeptical because of the transmission reviews. The dealer I’m talking to has a lifetime drivetrain warranty but I’m still on the fence. They have some 2024s with manual transmissions. Any opinion on if the manual is worth the buy? Or take the chance with the lifetime warranty?

Your More likely to whack another deer in the next week than your trans going out in 24 Tacoma . Could it happen yes but chances are slim

Best way to not worry about rebuilding an automatic transmission is to not have one.

I'm 49 years old and a manual transmission is the only part of an automobile I havent had the pleasure of replacing.

Was your 2015 a manual transmission? And, is the dealer offering the lifetime drivetrain warranty on either transmission?

When I traded my 17 in on the 24 , that was 1 of the reasons I got the 24. Dealership offered me lifetime motor and transmission.

New dealer is offering lifetime on both manuals and automatics. Seems hard to pass up.

That was a warranty from a 3rd party right and not a toyota warranty correct ?

The things you heard on the 24 are no different than any year of any make of any model of any manufacturer. The issues ALWAYS get blown up by forums and YTers looking for likes and follows.

We bought a 24 and were shopping 23’s as well. Here was our deciding factor. The new 23’s just were not getting discounted enough to offset the brand new model and all the things you get with the 24 vs 23.

There is zero details on when the 25 (much to all the sales people that allegedly know everything based on a few here) and even it they were announced tomorrow it is a solid 2 months before one hits a dealer. If you want another Tacoma then just go buy a 24 that suits you.

From what I was told it’s from Toyota , but 1 of the main head bosses at the dealership said if I buy it from them . It’s lifetime warranty on both , but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s non transferable if I were to sell it. :notsure:

I’m sorry about your truck! Why not another 2nd gen?

Read the fine print on those lifetime warranties, I believe a lot of them require the vehicle to be dealer serviced, which is frankly one of two reasons why such an offer is viable (that, and most people turn over cars too frequently for it to matter).

Depends what you want out of your new truck. The third gen is basically a 2nd gen as they never committed to a full redesign. If you like the 4.0 you might be a little disappointed in the 3.5 and the 6spd, that being said it’s a little more refined and has a stronger top end.

The 4th gen is a completely different feeling truck. The power train is light years ahead in terms of power delivery and drivability. The hybrid has the power delivery of a diesel. The linked rear suspension and fully boxed frame ride a lot better than the open c channel and leaf sprung third gens. It’s quieter, has a better seating position and feels more robust in a good way. However it feels like a larger truck and reminds me more of a full size than the previous gens. I personally want to see what problems pop up with a completely new generation before committing.

The 3.5 is proven at this point, and I think the third gens will hold their value because of how simple, robust and old school they feel compared to the new vehicles. Can’t go wrong with either, and I don’t think the transmission problems are widespread enough at this point for it to be a major problem. I think the 2.4l will be a very reliable motor in the long run, it’s very simple and has less moving parts than the 3.5.

That 23 was about 40k. There are a bunch of 23’s out there for sale for similar prices. For not much more I could get into the 24. Just want the most reliable and best features. I drove a loaded 24 TRD manual sport with the all the options and it seemed good. The auto tailgate and upgraded exhaust were cool but I don’t need that. Leather seats are cool design but I would be happy with cloth. Then drove a 24 TRD automatic sport and it was much smoother steering and acceleration. Then drove a 24 TRD off road manual. The manual first gear is a fairly slow speed which would be good for off road but not so much for in town shifting. The 23 rode felt almost just like my ‘15. I think I’ll wait to see if any factory incentives come out in the next few weeks.

I believe the manual trans in the 24 has had some issues too. Just a FYI.

What is a lifetime warranty? Whose lifetime? Yours or the trucks? And if the trucks- what is a trucks lifetime?

Your mileage may vary, but I was a lotta disappointed with the 3G and finally sold it. Be sure to get a good test drive in - while I've got a couple good excuses, I didn't, and I lost about $8,000 when I finally threw in the towel and got a 2G.

NO way I'd pay the same amount for a 23 when you can get a 24...Go drive the 4th gen and see for yourself! The transmission "issues" have been mostly resolved now, and with the TSB AND a lifetime warranty, why worry?

I’ve been in a 23 for a year now. I was planning to get a 24 but circumstances dictated that I buy a truck a few months before they came out. My 23 is very nice, very comfortable, looks good and obviously hasn't had any problems within a year. But its driving manners are the worst of any car I’ve ever owned. Can’t wait to get rid of it. Before that I had the 2nd Gen Tacoma and a 2000 LX470. Both of those vehicles or a better driving experience than the 2023 Tacoma. I just can’t imagine somebody driving a 23 and a 24 and deciding to get the 23.
