2015 owners, did your key fob come programmed with the truck when you bought it?

Or did they program it at the dealership when you bought your truck?

I recently bought a 2015 OR DCSB (I went out of state 2 hours driving because it was near the end of the 2015's and there weren't any in central Ohio that I could find) and the key fobs they gave me along with my keys weren't working. I told the sales person about it and he said their parts/service was closed so there was no one there that could program it for me that day. He said I could come back the next day but that would have been a 2+ hour trip again for the key fobs. He looked up how to program it and that long step by step process came up but he wasn't really comfortable with doing that. I asked him what we could do and he said take it to a dealership near me and see if they can program them for me or visit them again. He said to tell my local dealership what happened with how the service department was closed at the dealership I bought it from and they were unable to program it for me. I did more research on the key fob programming and some people said it doesn't work on the 2015.

I took it to my local dealership this morning and told them about everything and they said it was going to still cost me, the initial key fob programming wasn't part of my warranty, and that it would be 1 hour worth of labor and cost per key fob. Are the key fobs really not covered by the warranty and is it really an hours worth each key fob on the 2015?

something is fishy with that....I have never bought a new or used vehicle where the FOB's didn't work. I would have bailed on the deal and drove home.... just my useless 2 cents. They had to know you were driving that distance and someone else must have test drove that truck. Start being nicely aggressive.

Original dealer definitely screwed that up. My 2015 came with two key fobs, both programmed prior to my buying the truck. They're included with your purchase. Just like floor mats, bed rail cleats, etc. The original dealer should fix that and then some, since it's a two-hour drive each way.

If local dealer will not program it I would call the district manager and let them know. Your local dealer is trying to rip you off and someone needs to be notified. All they should have to do is make one phone call to the selling dealer to get the story and the program the fob. Should have had the selling dealer call the local guy to verify it was cost free. Threaten to take the truck back and also to notify the BBB. Bet it gets done real quick.

This. You bought a truck that is supposed to come with 2 from the factory, the dealer messed up. I would give the original dealer a call and tell them what this dealer is telling you, and see if they will fix it with them. At worst the one who programs it should bill the original dealer. You already paid for 2 fobs, you should get them without being pushed around. Dealers are scum bags.

All great advice above with one other point to add - don't forget to remind them that you have a customer satisfaction survey to fill out. Those things mean the world to the selling dealer and they won't take it lightly when you mention you are 'not completely satisfied'.

My two FOBs came pre-programmed on my 2015. Sounds really fishy to me.

I don't know that it's fishy, my bet is that one got lost and they replaced it but hadn't programmed it yet.

I'd be kinda pissed. And that survey wouldn't have very many "Truly Exceptional" responses.

Edit: both of mine were programmed

I can't imagine why you could not go to any Toyota Dealer in the Country and have them program them free of charge.

Except I highly doubt it is covered under the 3yr/36k bumper to bumper warranty and since the OP didn't buy the truck from them they are even less likely to provide the goodwill gesture. Contrary to popular belief, service departments don't like doing anything for free. The OP could contact the purchasing dealer and see if they could arrange something with another dealer but that is about the only other option.

It's unfortunate, but the OP will probably have to drive back to the purchasing dealer if he or she wants the keys programmed for free.

The truck is Covered Bumper to Bumper, the issue might not even be a programming one, there could be a failure in the receiver in the truck itself, you should be able to pull into any Toyota Dealer and say my Key Fobs fail to open or close the doors.

Wear items aren't covered bumper to bumper. Tires are covered by the tire manufacturer. Where a key fob lies as far as a warranty claim is concerned-I don't know. Are the fobs programmed by the manufacturer or are they programmed during prep by the dealer? If it is by the dealer then the purchasing dealer would be the ones to correct the issue. No other dealer is going to do it without a charge.

I don't see the keys or Fobs as a wear item, I see it as a brand new vehicle that has a malfunction, no reason for any dealer not to cover it. If a dealer refused I would call Toyota Corporate and open a case.

That's bullshit. Of course all FOB's that come with a new vehicle are are programmed. Your local dealer is a dick because you didn't buy from them.
I'd try another local dealer. If they want to charge you, call Toyota and demand these FOB's get programmed at no charge.
While you're talking to Toyota corporate, mention the local dealers lack of support on a new Toyota.

As far as future issues go? I would never set foot in that local dealership again.
