Pretty sure it was a lot more than $400 to register my 2015 in CO when I bought it last March but don't have the receipt on hand. Renewal is a lot cheaper though. State and local government here can't raise taxes without a ballot initiative so they raise fees instead. Pretty stupid way to do things since we could have a progressive income tax instead of a flat income tax + high sales tax and not screw over everyone struggling to get by.

My '14 is right at or over $400 here in CA. CA sucks, my wife and I have a dream of moving to Montana... but it'll never happen. All our family is out here with us. I'm with all the other commenters and agree CA is sucking it's people dry, especially if you do fairly well. And literally we get nothing in return except for... the beach I guess? "Sunshine Tax"... this year it's more like the devils butthole tax with how hot and smokey it's been.

    Devil’s butthole lol

I’ve been seriously looking at Montana as well, the issue is my type of engineering is very niche so it’s hard to find positions I’m qualified for.

I think i paid about $420 and some change at the beginning of this year when mine was due.

from inspecting the bill, i noticed that our trucks have an added charge as a "commercial vehicle", which is apparently default for all pickup trucks in the state. basically, because we have a bed, our trucks have commercial use capability, and automatically get charged as such.

Apparently, the only workaround is to get it re-registered as a personal use vehicle, but upon doing so, you are virtually never allowed to put anything in the bed, or risk a big ticket getting pulled over. Unless you have a camper shell, in which case you can put whatever you want back there.

$50 every 2 years for registration. $35 inspection yearly and excise tax every year, but my 11 year old Tacoma is valued around $1600 for that 5% taxation.

Stay out of Seattle/King County. The rest of the state is fairly good but around here they use some sort of magic calculation for taxes.

CA also adds a $25 smog abatement fee, which is a clandestine way to say "your truck is too new for smog so we are going to charge you a fee to make up for the lost smog certification revenue". Classic CA.

As said things vary by state. Your fee for the vehicle would be a value tax. And you have inspections, correct?

In Fl you pay a state sales tax at purchase of 6%. Annual tag fees vary a little by vehicle weight, but my personal plate on the truck is ~$71. So a normal plate is less. And we have no front plate, and can have antique plates on vehicles over 25yo, substantially discounted.

    No inspections.

No state income tax. (Why a lot of pro athletes and other high income folks chose to make Fl their primary residence).

Sales tax for the state for non grocery items is 6%. Some counties have passed (by citizen vote) a 1% adder that is dedicated to special projects like public parks, etc., so 7%

Property tax is not cheap, and millage varies by county. But we do have a 'save our homes' rule (copied from Cali IIRC, many years ago) that controls the % rise in what you pay on your primary home. So if you stay put a while it's very helpful. And the defered amount is portable to another property if you sell your primary and buy another within a certain time slot. Having sold / bought last year, my taxes for this year are 3/5ths of what my neighbors in same housing is, because they came from some situation that didn't include portability.

I hear they’re going up 10x in Utah next year, will be $2000 and up, definitely better to stay in CA than move here.
