I just did a thorough examination of the underside of my truck. Wow, the rust is everywhere. I painted everything I saw with motor oil. The truck is less than 1 yr old, it has far more rust on it than my Ford had after 7 yrs. the Toyota dealer I purchased from said Toyota did not recommend undercoating. I'm going to do Fluid Film ( professionally) this year and touch it up myself thereafter. This is basically just a heads up to those that haven't look under their truck in a while, it's bad.

Known issue that they do recalls for as we speak about. I think only up until 2011 though. I am sure eventually 2012+ will be on the list. Sad isn't it??

I clean the frame of my truck pretty often with a power washer to attempt to get any grime off of it that might cause rust. I typically spray everything down with Simple Green, let it sit for a few minutes and then blast it with the high pressure hose at a quarter car wash. I also spray Fluid Film on the frame rails which seems to help too. I know it's annoying to have to do this, but it's better than letting it rust.

I don't know what they put on the roads down there, but all the worst frames in any given frame rust thread have been from PA.

you could wash it with ( saltaway) its what they use to wash outboard engines out with it works well i use it after i leave the boat ramp to wash my wheel well and under side. also us (corrosion X) . in a spray can its like 20 bucks a can it stops the rust and is a lubricant also used in outboards on engines . you can spray it on engine and whatever . Amazon sells the stuff . i buy it locally.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not familiar with salt away or corrosion X, will have to do some research. The brine they put on our roads is nasty stuff, I generally do the pressure underwash at least weekly in the winter. The problem I'm seeing looks like the frame coating is not adhering to the welds and is thin at the edges of any perforations. The springs and rivets are also going faster than I expected.

Its weird, my 2011 looks brand new underneath. Never coated it. Spray it occasionally. Shit, still has the stickers on the frame.

You live in a paradise where it doesn't snow, ice or have terrible weather...and for that I'm jealous.

I think most rusty frames will be from northern states where we feel the need to drop a ton of salt, brine, and whatever else on the roads from November to April.

The alternative is sand/gravel being used in place of salt. The downside here is cracked windshields. Our provincial gov't has been cutting back in the winter. Waiting later to start snow clearing, using sand/gravel once the salt supply gets low which seems like it doesn't take long. Roads are terrible and downright dangerous during and post storm. So we get the rust agent first then the window busting gravel afterwards.

    grrrrrrr

Hey op I live in pa as well. I just got a 15 and have been searching the World Wide Web sinc I got it for a rust protection while it has less then 1000miles on it.

I sold my 2013 taco with 24,xxx miles on it with surface rust staring on everything under the truck. The rear diff was covered in surface rust, every single weld inder the truck was rusting, all the unpainted bolts and threads under there, and the paint on the frame was starting to bubble under the front doors. On a 2year old 24k vehichle!!!

Needless to say I've been worried about letting this happen again. I narrowed it down to this kit or carwell
    http://shopusa.corrosionfree.com/Rust-Cure-Formula-3000-DIY-Kit-20L-Pack-RUSTC20L.htm
It's almost 300shipped but it treats up to 7 times so I figure I can get 7 years out of it doing it in the late fall, then clean the crap out of it and apply oil in the spring.

But I still don't know yet, might just get a carwell spray now and give me another year to think about it.

Desperate for info/experience for rust proofing(following this thread) I think the only solution is to move south. :/

My '11 frame looks almost new too. Stickers are on it and everything. And I live in Western MA with tons of road salt every winter.

My 11 frame and undercarriage looked almost new when I bought it a few months ago. That is one of the reasons I picked it over a blue 2007. I noticed last week that it had been Ziebart undercoated. Not sure if it is the undercoating or just a great batch of frames in 2011.

I don't want an undercoating, I want a clear spray. I read that undercoating can trap moisture and hide problems. Undercoating is more for sound deadening anyway.

When I sold my 13 the frame wasn't garbage, it was surface rust developing, when a normal person looked at it they would say it was mint as well. Looked black stickers still on yada yada, I'm just ocd and crawl around looking at stuff most people dnot even know exist/give a shit about.
