Can someone please tell me if the hole at the top left of the gas tank is supposed to be there?

Looks like they drilled it to steal the gas

Hmm. I’m no thief but wouldn’t they drill at bottom so it drains quicker?

It does look like someone drilled it. But the hole is super smooth like maybe it’s there from factory as well. Just wondering if there’s a plug that possibly fell out.

It looks like someone drilled a hole to put a siphon hose in. Much safer way to steal gas that bypasses the flap in the filler neck. Sorry OP, this sucks.

It is much quicker, but you will be wearing gas once the bit breaks through. And gas vapors around electric motor brushes are a bad combo. I guess if you used a brushless Milwaukee cordless you could keep from combusting yourself, but you will still be wearing gas.

I would think that this would trigger a CEL since the truck can't pull a vacuum on the fuel system similar to having a leaky gas cap. I don't think there is a cheap or easy solution to this. Some fucker got a couple gallons of gas and you get stuck with $$. Your best bet may be to start calling auto recycling yards and see if you can locate a tank. New from Toyota is going to be stupid money.
While you are swapping out the tank you might as well upgrade to the TRD straps that let you put a fuel tank skid in place. An aluminum skid plate would make it enough of a pain to move on to an easier target. Our trucks are easy since there is so much room under the vehicle to work with.

A fair amount of effort and risk to steal 10 gallons of gas. Scum doesn’t have $40?

The person that did that has done it before.

Sorry OP. I hope they get caught, and someone kicks the shit out of them the whole time they are under there trying to get out.

    That sucks!!! Sorry op
I still don’t see why they took the risk of drilling higher on the tank where the vapors would be more likely to encounter sparks...nice clean hole though ,by someone in a hurry on their back with a hand tool.....

Don't know how well this would work as the hole is pretty dam large, but with rusted steel tanks I've managed to use a sheet metal screw and an epoxy patch, like good old JB Weld. It held until I junked the truck.

Get creative, maybe a small piece of light gauge steel or aluminum, and the right JB Weld could get you by until you could replace it.

I take no responsibility, this suggestion is at your own risk.

Boy, that hole sure looks clean.

21 gallons. 75 bucks or more depending on where you are. There have been other threads where people have asked with the higher fuel prices if we would see more of this kind of thing.
