Has anyone come up with a good tailgate assist for the 15. I know a lot of the easy lift systems don't work with the 15. Does anyone know if you can take the 16-17 assist and incorporate it to work on the 15?

    Thanks guys and gals

I am also curious. I looked at my brothers new 2017 and it seems to have the exact same mounts and hardwear other than having the damper in them. I am wanting to do the same thing, but just need to find the P/N and hopefully it wont cost outrageous. Maybe someone else can chime in and have P/N and if itll work out not.

Ive looked at the 3rd gen tailgate dampener. It is not a direct replacement fit.

If someone came up with a viable design that could be used on the '12 through '15, they could make a bundle of cash!

Ive been looking into it. That's why I checked out the 3rd gen tail gate. The hard part for some people is the owner would still have to attach the dampener itself to their truck.

Also, if the fab is possible, it would fit all 2nd gens, 05-15.

I've thought about trying to piece together a dampener that would be used in place of the cable. This would of course mean that it would have to both dampen and support all of the weight on the tailgate when it is in the open position. It would also need to be easily removable if someone wanted to take the tailgate off.

If someone can build this quicker than I can, I'll buy one.

Ive been meaning to buy the parts from Toyota for a while, I just never got around to it. Perhaps I'll go down to the dealership this week and look at getting the dampener and hinge and see if I can come up with something. I too would love to have a dampened tailgate.

You might also be able to modify the dampener used on the '05 through '11.

on the 3rd gens there are still support cable to hold the tailgate when open. The dampener just slows it so you dont have to put it down and can let it drop.

The earlier 2nd gens ('05 - '11) have the same thing but if you try to use the same dampener on the '12 -'15, it interferes with and pinches the cable. That's why I was thinking if a dampener could be designed with a mechanical stop that would do the same thing as the cable and support the tailgate when it is fully down, you could simply eliminate the cable.

It would be nice to have no cables.

I thought of eliminating the cable myself in the quest for a dampener for the tailgate.

I installed this assist on my tailgate. I then flattened the catch on the cable circled in red (not my picture, but I'll take one tomorrow). I've had it for about 6 months with no cable pinch and no tailgate shift.

It would be great but you gotta support the weight some how.
