Looking at a 2015 TRD. It’s had one owner but looks a little rusty underneath to me. Can I get your thoughts on these pics? I have a 2019 currently, zero rust. Good trade or no?

I would wire brush the rusty spots and use corroseal. It turns the iron oxide (rust) into magnetite stopping the rust. Looks good too. The rust isn't bad btw.

it’d be close. I owe like 17k on mine. Not sure what they’d give me. This one is around 30k. I feel like my payments and length of loan I currently have will be about the same. Just worried I’m jumping the gun. But I’ve always heard 2015 is one of the best years.

wonder why the spare is so bad? That thing looks rough. The rest looks alright so that’s the important part.

I’ve always heard 2015 was one of the best years as far as reliability and drivability. I’ve always heard 3rd gens aren’t as good. I don’t love my 2019. Feels like I have to mash the gas pedal to get any power and I can feel all the gear hunting and shifting. It’s not pleasurable to drive but it looks ok. I miss my 1997.

IMO, just have someone like @JustDSM tune your car. I bet you'll be happier with it. It'll solve your gear hunting and bump up a little extra hp/tq. A 2nd gen isn't going to be any faster. All gens of these trucks are slow.

read the 2nd Gen shifted smoother. If I tune, that would void my Toyota warranty I’d assume. I bought platinum plan.

2015 won't have a warranty at this point. And honestly, the odds of this truck needing a warranty is pretty slim. But if it helps you sleep better at night...

could’ve added Max Care warranty on the 2015 but I waited too long anyway. It’s gone. So moot point now. I agree about slim chance needing warranty- but we had the transmission go in my wife’s Rav4 as well as a couple other things - so now I always get the warranty.

After having recently cleaned, wire brushed, pressure sprayed, and corrosealed about all of the frame humanly possibly on my 2nd gen, I will say that there are a lot more places for rust to form than I thought there would be.

I was no stranger to the underside of my truck either. I hit it with either wool wax or fluid film every year. With everything taken off the truck - spare, fender liners, tires, etc, I got a much better view of the situation.

Personally, I wouldn’t trade a no rust frame for a frame with any rust, just because it would keep me up at night knowing there was any rust on my truck at all.

That said, if you do, I highly back this recommendation for corroseal. I covered all of the frame in a thick coat and got a nice result.

My spare on my 2015 looks worst then that but I live in the rust belt, truck gets rust checked every year but it always washes off the spare. Another part that I found recently that collects rust is under the shield for the drivers cat. There is a brace spot welded to the cab floor that never gets any film due to the shield. My shield rotted off and now I found that the floor is now rusted under it. Applied the heavy rust check and installed a new shield, hopefully it holds out for a few years.
