No they are not. The block, or parts of it, might be the same but the injection and cycling are completely new and not used in any other vehicle in that combination. That has been stated in multiple interviews. Naturally each of these parts likely has been used in other vehicles in a similar form (the Atkinson cycle is used in their motors for hybrids and the dual injection on the Lexus) but they've never been used together in the same engine.

All vehicles go through some degree of testing before being released to the public. Some brands much more than others. Additionally, some brands have significant option changes during the life cycle of a particular model. My experience has been that GM products are not very well worked out when initially introduced(1960 Corvair, Fiero, diesel Oldsmobile, 80's 4-6-8 Cadallic, 1985 Olds, 1999 5.3, and many others) . GM greatly improves their products during the life cycle of a particular model. On the other end of the spectrum, most Japanese companies change a particular model(normal 5 year cycle, except for Tacoma - 10 yr this time) relatively little with a normal mid-cycle face lift being about it. Honda Accord and Civics, Avalon, Camry, etc. After over 35 years of Toyota and Honda ownership, I'm much less reluctant to own a newly introduced model of those two brands than a domestic offering, especially GM. Yes, I'm aware that even these companies have a few more initial problems but they are small in comparison (2007 Tundra axles, ball joints, 2000 Tundra trailering electrical, 2013 Accord infotainment glitches, etc) such as 1999 5.3 knocking, engine & transmission replacements, 5.4 Ford spark plug issue, etc.
I plan on a 2016 Tacoma with expectation of a minor problem or two. Toyota's relatively recent "quality" issue/delimmia has likely resulted in an extreme effort by the company to minimize any introductory problems. Just my thoughts.

If I wait to get the 2015 in August/September and the dealer doesn't have the model I want, can I still special order it?

Likely not, at that point they production line/process will be filled with 2016 parts and building the new trucks.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.

If you need a special order better do it now and hope they build it.
They are speeding up the conversion to 2016 due to peaked interest.

No, looks like from the fleet site that last allocations of 2015 are in May (meaning you'd need to order by May). If I understand the process correctly there would already have to be an allocation available similar enough to what you want that could be altered to match your requirements. Some people wait more than a month for a build to be scheduled to their requirements. So if you are very particular about what you want I'd order sooner rather than later.

Alternatively do a inventory search right now and see how common the configuration you want is. If it is pretty common maybe you won't need to special order at all and there will be one to be found late in the game anyway.

^ Exactly. He should consider ordering now or soon and looking at existing inventory. Toyota said Fall of 2016, which means likely November which means the line will probably start building 2016's sometime September-October with conversion just before. I wouldn't wait past July-August if you want a 2015.

Doubt they are speeding anything up. The last of the 1st gens were built some time in August of 2004. The first of the 2nd gens were built in the same month, August 2004. That's probably the same case for this gen, I think both Texas and Mexican plant switch production to the 3rd gen on the exact same day probably in mid August 2015. They will be on the lots in Socal and Texas in late August or early September. No way are they waiting til halloween.

Awesome find! I've already emailed my sales guy to confirm the May date, and to make sure we can get a specs sheet before then. Anything he shares is definitely getting posted here. Thanks for the link!

The thing is I'm leaving for boot camp soon and won't be back until late August or early September. Is there any way I can check the inventories somewhere? I checked the local dealers around me and none seem to have it.

Even if a local dealer doesn't have a particular truck they can often get one from another dealer in their geographic region (which is often quite large). Best option is to talk to the internet sales group at one of your local dealers, they tend to be less high pressure getting you to buy something you don't want on the lot. They can check inventory in their area and see if there is something that matches your desired configuration and have it within a week or two.

Otherwise if you order something from production right now the soonest you'll see it is 6 to 8 weeks. Which sounds like might be too late for you.

I bought a 2015 a few months ago and had the same problem. What swayed my thinking was, I bought the off road upper end model with a v6 five speed. If you buy say a four with the dreadful four speed auto, you will be supremely disappointed when a new 2016 cost similarly with a six speed and runs circles around you with it's lighter chassis while getting better mileage. If I were buying a manual 2wd, the 2015 might be OK as well. A 4 wd 4 cylinder in the longer WB with a 4 speed auto is good as a trash hauler and doesn't cruise well carrying much weight. Like said...it depends upon the options and your use.

Tacoma: Bone stock down to the air filter....for now..... Supra: Too much to list....
Last week, I drove the 2015 Tacoma 4.0L back to back against the 2016 3.5L. When I initially read the window sticker, I saw that peak torque was about the same (although at higher rpm) and HP got a nice bump for 2016. But there is nothing like cubic inches for natural low rpm torque, and I can't believe Toyota dropped 0.5L!! This was obvious a trick to get credit for better mpg along with the Atkinson cycle, but the end result is that the 2016 is noticeably more sluggish when tooling around town, and who wants to rev a truck to feel power? Trucks should be and usually are tuned differently than sports cars.

Combined with the Brillo Pad/Cheese Grater front grill, the 2016 is a step backwards in my opinion. The 2016 interior has been nicely redone, but having loads of torque available everywhere is essential to the daily driving experience of a truck, and the 4.0 trumps it there with ease. So I went with the 2015, which is my daily driver, and couldn't be happier with the overall experience! The only obvious complaints are why didn't they give the Tacoma the 270 HP V-6 from the FourRunner and why they can't squeeze better than 21 mpg out of it??! The recent American competition has managed to beat 21 mpg with a LOT more power. But then again, my money is on the Tacoma lasting longer and being worth a LOT more when the time comes to sell it many years from now.

Next step for me is some kind of K&N intake for at least a mild (but noticeable according to most) improvement.

I recently looked at a 2016 trd offroad package truck in the inferno color. The interior is very nice upgrade, looks like the bed is deeper. They finally moved the trailer plug!! Its in the rear bumper!!

The truck looks better in person yes, but the front grill is still fugly. The rear tailgate feels solid and is likely a structural improvement but it is super thick and I personally don't like it. The one I looked at was an auto, so I didn't see the manual which is what I would buy and I didn't drive it.

Overall I am super happy that I bought my 2015 TRD Pro inferno truck and supercharger.

The price bump on the the sticker of the new 2016 is pretty noticeable.

It looks very well done over all and pretty nice. I am sure people are going to love it. I was very jealous of the factory cargo light button! But I personally like my 2015 better still. Maybe somebody will bastard a 2015 front on a 2014 and make it look better.
