You might get a different bias if posted in the 3rd gen thread.

I, for one, haven't a single complaint about my 3rd gen.

I'd buy your 2015 over leasing a new 3rd gen. Like everybody has posted above, I stuck with my 2nd gen after getting to do an extended test drive of a 3rd gen. Smaller motor plus the constant shifting from the automatic 6spd drove me nuts.

I would be interested to see what would happen if you posted this question in the 3rd gen section.

I went from a 09 TRD DCLB Sport to a '17 TRD OR AC. Personally, I like the 3rd gen a lot more. I believe that it feels more comfortable driving on the highway. I also like the technology upgrades that are in the new ones. I will say though that the transmission is annoying. My '09 & '17 are AT, but the '17 down shifts without even thinking twice about it, whereas the '09 would not. I understand that it has an extra gear so it will utilize the gears more blah blah blah, but I do wish that it would hold more in each gear going uphill, especially considering it has more torque. But with all of that being said, I personally like the '17 more. Either way its personal preference at the end of the day.

According to a regional manager in the Great Lakes region, they are selling all of the 2016's they can make - (Texas and Mexico), so apparently the "market" - the customers Toyota relies on for Tacoma sales, don't share the opinion of many TW members regarding 3rd gens. Why does that not surprise me

I kinda dig the look of the 17 but I liked the look of the new HD RG until I rode it..., I'll keep my '10! I want reliability and low operator cost. Plus in a few years I'd like to wheel it to replace my jeep.

If ya like the 15 and the dealers gonna let ya have it for a reasonable price I would keep it. If ya change your mind in a couple of years you could always sell it or trade it in, probably with little loss in value.

All three gens review. Interesting as they said the 3rd gen "completely different and puts out really good power that you can feel off the line, much more economical, and tows beautifully". Any 2nd gen and 3rd gen owners that can attest to this? Then they show a 1st gen vs 3rd gen drag race then a 2nd gen vs 3rd gen and it just basically shows how much more "power" the 3rd gen has.

I would only get a new truck if you want/need/can afford it. IMO I would want to get rid of a payment ASAP. No sense pissing away money you could eventually use to mod.

Why would you want a 3rd Gen? I think that is the question. No point in changing if there is no logical motivation behind it.

I liked the look of the 3rd Gen in pictures but in person it's hideous. I wouldn't go for it. Engine also sucks. So I vote keep what you have for sure.

Same case here. Started seeing some of the 3rd gens on the lots and freaked out a little. By the time I noticed, there were not many 15s left. Found the 1st double cab long bed and jumped on it. Truck was everything I wanted except color and they were willing to negotiate some, which is uncommon for my area. The shifty transmission and high rpm is something I want no part of and in my opinion has no business in a truck......to each their own.

I tried really hard to like the new 3.5 liter and I couldn't get over how little power it had a low RPM. I needed a DCLB so I knew if I was going to get an automatic, I had to like it. I tested a gen 2 and was sold. Power is good. Not a V8 but it has some major pull.

    Try going from a 2002 3.4L to a 15 4.0L. Love my 15.

I like some of the funny "expert opinions" on here from 3rd gen test drivers but not owners. I have owned 5 tacomas, 1st, 2nd and 3rd, each different, each pros and cons.

    2nd gen:
    - proven quality, dependability and reliability
    - outdated looks interior and exterior
    - lacking tech and features
    - classic look, 4.0 is a great engine and the 5 spd is sound as well
    - 2nd gens have had their problems too, look at all the new secondary air pump failures ($1400 repair), bad wheel bearings, etc.
    - crappy mpg 17-19

    3rd gen:
    - has had the most problems of all my tacomas, developed after 5k miles (for those who say "love my 17 no issues" ya just wait) I had the rear diff replaced twice, lower control arm plugs needed, transmission fluid was 1/4 low (but so were 14-15 transmissions for those that have a forgetful mind, not 3rd gen exclusive), zerks were dry upon delivery and had some plastic components replaced, so far though at 12k shes holding sound, never left me stranded though as of yet
    - for those that test drove a 3rd gen and claim the upshifting would bother them, mine did that but after the TSB its buttery smooth, cant tell the difference between my 2nd and 3rd gen shifting patterns
    - I consistently have managed 19-22 mpg with 265 BFG KO2 bro tires
    - the tech and features blow the 2nd gen out of the water, my 16 Sr5 has way more features than my 15 TRD sport had
    - the interior is WAYYYYY better, super quiet and fit and finish are really good
    - looks are updated, I get more compliments than I did on any of my 2nd gens, once you get rid of the cheese grater grille it looks good, is it a classic look like the 2nd gen, no, but its modern and good looking when dressed right
-price is getting ridiculous, $40k for a Tacoma...

Time will tell if the 3rd gen will be as reliable, but I have my reservations in regards to the powertrain, the 2nd gens did have teething issues as well, we will see. It really boils down to what is important to you in a truck. If your biggest priority is proven reliability and the 4.0 then the 2nd gen is for you. If you care more about tech, features, updated looks, better mpg then the 3rd gen is for you.

They are just 2 different trucks in my opinion, each has their pros and cons, both are good choices. Do I miss my 2nd gen, yes, there are things I love about my 3rd gen but for me I just like my 2nd gens and have more faith in their proven track record.
