I don't think the engine in my ES "simulates" the Atkinson cycle. Not the expert tho.

I was referring more the RX, but fair point. On those you get to deal with idiot kids borrowing daddy's car and going to street race their buddies lol. On a more serious note there are a few turbocharged ES350's running around. Come to think of it, the ISF is the same basic car but with a 5.0L 2ur-gse.. I bet that shares engine mount points in the taco >.> Next gen of that engine will likely be the 2UR-FKS, and probably direct injection. Man, it will never happen but that engine in a tacoma would be so sick.

I have the dealership loaner vehicle right now while rear diff on 3rd gen being replaced. It's the 2016 Camry XSE with our "truck motor" in it. Sure would be nice if the motor and transmission felt half as confident as it does in this camry!!

I'm hoping Toyota treats us as well as they treated Camry owners...
It had the same growing pains.

It was used in the IS350, GS350 and GS450h. The RX got it at the same time as the Tacoma, so it doesn't really offer any comparisons. The ES never had D4-S and the NX is a 4-cylinder.

In any case, the 2GR-FSE proved itself extremely reliable over the last 11 years. In lighter vehicles with less towing, but still. The 2GR-FKS isn't exactly the same obviously, but I doubt there will be many catastrophic failures.

The ES350 and IS F don't share anything in common really. Also the next generation of the 2UR-GSE is still called the 2UR-GSE. I would think the 3UR-FE is a more appropriate engine for the Tacoma though, it's a bit more truck-oriented. Perhaps one with a supercharger...

Can't remember the name of the poster but a lady on here posted a thread a couple months back when her 2016 went into limp mode as she was towing her horse trailer on a freeway on-ramp getting up to speed. Ended up the motor needed replaced as Toyota wanted to take that one out to study what went wrong with it or something like that if I recall, there was a huge thread on it. She was going the lemon law route if I remember correctly. Can't be too far back in the 3rd gen archives.

https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/truck-broke-down-today.427560/ Here is the thread of which you speak. This is the only catastrophic engine failure I've seen.

For the record, I read myself silly before buying this truck. I've owned/ driven pickups all my life, including 3 Toyotas. The 2016 is bad ass. Engine, transmission, creature comforts, off-road abilities are all perfect in my opinion. I only have ~5000 miles on mine so far, but I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I add this here, because undoubtedly this thread will catch the eye of lots of people who are considering what to buy and when. I bought the TRD OffRoad with 6 speed manual transmission. I fully intend to put 200K miles on it.

You are the exception to the gen 3 rule though. The manual is better suited for truck duty given it's gearing and bigger rear-end differential. I've driven the manual and it feels totally different than the auto even though the same engine is powering both trucks.

I disagree. An overwhelming majority of 3G owners on this forum are happy with their truck. If you want manual get one. Different strokes.

    I'm a little confused...
Do we not have '1,000' tranny threads?
Isn't a common arguement, "you don't hear from happy owners".
Just wondering how you came to this conclusion?

the common argument is for people who visit the beach on a weekend. On monday when they go to work, if they had a good time at the beach, they might tell one person that they had a good time. If they saw a shark, they are going to tell ten people at work that they saw a shark because it frightened them and they really want to share about it. I worked at a water park in high school and this story was always told at orientation day each year because for a lot of the people who visited the water park over the summer, this was their summer vacation.

There might be 20 threads about poor transmission performance. Because this is a specialty forum and not just a work place, due to the example I gave above, I assume the ratio of bad/good is much smaller than 1/10

I was basing that on the poll that showed about 200 users that are happy with their truck and about 15 that said they wish they had made a different decision.

I would think individual posts and the poll in tech is more telling, no?

Maybe I did not understand when John said hookembevo was the exception to the rule about being happy with his truck.
