The ADD on the 2nd gens wear out over time, but the transfer case actuators are pretty solid. We have the same front diff for the most part, but it looks like the transfer case actuator is different.

I do 4WD leaving my subdivision and 2WD on my way to work.

My rule is if I can't see clear pavement I do 4WD. The hell with mileage and wear, I paid for a 4WD I'm gonna use it, even though I have really good winters.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one. I was looking at pictures of the 2017 Tacoma trd offroad with 4wd today and I saw there is a button to turn on a center differential up on the headliner by the crawl control knob. Does that mean that technically the center differential can be unlocked while in 4H mode so that you can drive it like an all-the-time 4wd? The only reason I ask is because my 4th gen 4runner was like this to where could put it in 4H and unlcok the center diff to where I could go through a trail and not have to constantly stop to disengage 4H going around a turn. Can't find much on the 2017s yet, Thanks.

That overhead button is the rear diff lock. There in no center diff, just an old school transfer case with a stupid electronic actuator. No AWD/full time 4WD.

My apologies. I thought the graphic on the button was the same as my center diff lock. Thanks for the response!
