I'm still trying to figure out why so many complaints? Didn't any of these complainers test drive their trucks...? Then why buy it?

    Wow, amazing , like I have said I came from a 06 F250 diesel
This is my first Tacoma 16 MGM or 4x4 with a build date of 1/19
    Mileage as of today 289
I am so happy with the way this small truck runs and preforms
No problems with the way the A/T runs also has more then enough HP
    Hum , I don't see the problem

Yes we test drove... but this is something you don't get a feel for until after a couple of drives... if I would have known about this issue I WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT THIS TRUCK ...

No other 6 speed uses this flex torque that the Toyota engineer said this transmission has ...it makes it constantly Hunt around 300rpm up or down depending on throttle and load ... horrible design...fuel economy is the reason for it ... fuel economy is not that great

I now have almost 2000 miles and there has been no improvement. In fact I got the rough idle for the first time on Saturday. Bottom line this truck can't pull even a 1% grade below 3000 rpms. The new motor has so little torque down low that it forces the transmission to constantly down shift. It could have been addressed by using the additional gear as something other than a double overdrive but they chose to Insert the additional gear as a hyper overdrive that's only useful going downhill. My real world MPG is like 15.2 and can often drop below 14 if climbing hills on the highway. The ect and sport mode tricks are psychological mostly as they don't add power or change ratios. Too bad because I like mostly everything else. All in all this was a bad purchase and it's doubtful that resale will hold up as GM and others re enter this midsize market. If anything the previous gen may become more coveted since they don't suck.

Stop pulling shit out of your ass. You joined today only to complain about your new truck? If you don't like the truck, you only have yourself to blame. You obviously know more than the engineers who built this truck. Please explain to us what this "flex torque" is? I am honestly wondering if you even have a 16.

The tacoma has already out sold the colorado 2 to 1. It will most certainly hold it's retail value. Colorado entered the market last year and tacoma has remained more popular. How are you getting 14mpg? Also the ect button does change gear ratios. Look it up.

Weird, my truck will pull 6% grades in 6th and get 12-14mpg while doing it at 2300 rpm. 20-23 mpg tank averages. The truck has tons of torque down low, I can pull 4% grades at 2000 rpm in 6th. Manual.

My '14 5 speed pulled 24.9 mpg from Durango to Colorado Springs, and that included Wolf Creek and Levita Pass. I do have a little tail wind, but I didn't pamper the passes either.
I thought a 6 speed would be great, but it isn't so. I traded for the new torque curve and h.p. with the 3.5 to pull my small trailer. I wish I had the 3.5 attached to the old 5 speed.

The new 6 is constantly looking to downshift even when there is an overpass. When in "S" select shift mode, the trans does respond to upshifts when pulling a minimal grade and this kills the mpg. I was running 85 mph and clocking about 2,500 rpm in 6th, and encountered a slight grade and the SOB shifted to 4th. This is a total joke compared to the old 5 speed. Great gas mileage around town and the country, but the highway mpg's stink.

With the new torque curve this truck should be able to lug a low grade hill in 5th. You can use the "ECT" which enhances the engine response, but it still shifts too much.

If they went to a taller rear end gearing, that was a bad idea as well.

Yeah it's all the tranny, I hardly ever need 5th unless it's a mountain pass. I think auto owners would be shocked by how easily the manual pulls hills at low rpms

    None yet...
Well coming from a 2013 with manual transmission there is a huge difference of driving experience. The automatic does like to search...but the convience of not shifting was the main reason of going that direction. The gas on manual or automatic are both not the greatest.. but for these trucks you do have to know that going into it. That's why we're not on Prius World, we love our Tacos regardless:burnrubber:

Exactly what I told the service guy, that and it feels like the engine has a miss under load. I love everything else about the truck

I do 80% city 20% freeway and have yet to get under 20 mpgs! So I'm super happy with my filthy taco! Transmission is a tad funky overall but I wouldn't trade it for anything..and definitely not those gm shit boxes!!

I've just reached 2k miles on my '16. It does shift a lot when on the hwy between 6-5-4. Watching the instant mpg it does seem like it is trying to optimize gas mileage, however, it is annoying. I live in south Georgia where the only hills you have are bridges and sand dunes (beach), I average about 20 hwy/city combined. I recently just got back from a trip to Atlanta where most of the trip is hills and took backroads so I could get better mpg, it helped somewhat, overall I averaged 19 on the trip, and the majority of traveling was hwy at 65 mph. Kinda disappointed considering I can get the mpg close to 30 when traveling at 65 on flat land.

I've read about this before. Mine has not "acted up" as of yet and I hope it never does. It aggravates me though that I cannot check the fluid levels (with a dipstick) myself being that I do all maintenances on my vehicles.

Yes toyota told the dealership? The service manager at my dealership told me that he is fighting this issue. He says not enough are xomplaining for toyota to fix this issue and make a solution. He drove my truck and felt the issue and toyota told him after he recorded everything that its normal and he the service manager said its not and that he is going to find some way to fix it. If anyone has any info please let me know so we can all fix our trucks. Btw i have a trd offroad 2wd

I noticed the same thing two weeks after I bought the truck. I made an appt at the dealership and took a mechanic on the road to show him. I complained about the bogginess that happens when you take a slow speed turn and expect power and it does not downshift. He felt it and recognized it and said that they may come out with a software update but was sure it was to save MPG. The second complaint was the surging and delayed shifting that occurs. Note, this only occurs when the RPMs are idling at 1100 when you first start the vehicle and the cat is warming up. During this high-idle time there is a 1 second delay when shifting gears and if you are in gear and slowly letting off the brake you will feel the constant surge because of the high idle. Its annoying when trying to slowly back out my garage in the morning and is actually a safety issue. We will see if they actually come out with a SW update.

Do you need to know, or care?
I agree with all of this and have had my truck in the dealer twice for the tranny fluid issue. Better now since filled properly. Found difference in performance after 1500 miles on it, not sure if it's the learning on the tranny ECU, but definitely notice the difference in the off line performance. There are still times when it wants to save mpg over performance, but if I put my foot into it it goes as I expect it to. I've found it doesn't respond the same as my Gen2, but it's more of how I keep it in the high revs than anything else. If i keep it in the high revs it feels just as powerful as the Gen2 but if I'm lighter on the gas, it feels bogged down. Is this just particular of a higher horsepower engine with lower torque, I don't know, just a different driving style for me. Getting to know how it reacts and adjusting to it, but I keep learning every day. The surge thing seems to have died down a little with me over time, when it is running at 1200 RPM on a cold start and shift from park to drive it calms down a little and doesn't surge as much, but maybe it's just cause I'm use to it and adjust accordingly.
