We have the six speed on our Venza and that's exactly the way we alays drive it. You want a little extra power, a quick downshift and you have it. You can still use 5 and 6 for econmy. Just don't leave it in D unless you want to be bored to death.

I played around with the S mode today. Shifting through the he gears is better than a manual (no clutch) and reminds me of the race cars with gear shifting on the steering wheel. Very sweet. If I wanted great gas mileage I'd bought a Preius

Fuck. I was going to get a TRD Off-Road Access Cab, but now am wholly spooked by this gear-shifting phenomenon. Might now go for a Sport with MT, hood skewp be damned.

You can still control the transmission with the auto. There is no gear shift problem. You choose the upper limit and drive. If you traveling speed through town is less them 35 mph, just put it in 4 etc.

Pretty simple, but I guess not for some?

Complaining won't help either for those people. If we all went back to a two speed power glide, no one would complain about hunting and being in the wrong gear. It's a fact of life for all six speed transmissions.

I guess I'm easy to please. I haven't noticed a problem with mine at all. I just drive it! It seems to shift very smoothly and like others have said, if I'm deliberate the truck responds. I love it!

I recently read a road test of one of the Chrysler/Jeep products (Grand Cherokee, I think) that had the 8 speed auto. The tester commented that the vehicle hardly ever got into 8th, and that it spent a lot of time running up and down through the gears.

Yes it's Common Core math. 5X3=15 show your work.

    5+5+5=15 is the wrong answer.

    3+3+3+3+3=15 is the right answer.

    Oh and 7-3=5 not 4.

    Don't ask me, I don't have a clue. :annoyed:

'New' truck, new problems. From what I understand the 2nd Gen had/has its fair share. But the issues some of you are having are why I bought my archaic ten year old new truck, with a 6 speed manual of course.

Your right it is simple. Problem is when people spend that kind of money on a new vehicle they expect it to shift good in whatever mode it's in

This is my 4th day in a row of absolutely no issues and the truck is responding at its best ever. I am going to cancel my appointment at the dealer until my 5000 mile service I am going to bring up all the issues and complaints with the shifting. even though it's driving incredible right now my biggest complaint now is it shifting out of sixth gear into 5th while in cruise control I can maintain speed with my foot and have it not down shift I think the cruise control should be able to do the same thing. Also ( mjones) I'm hoping you truck wakes up one day soon and starts driving like mine. Let me know when it happens. Mine was at 2400 miles when it (woke up).

It seems like my tranny issues are getting better the more I drive the truck. 1800 miles on the odometer and much less erratic shifting. Keeping fingers crossed it continues to get better

Years ago the car mfgs incorporated some form of logic controls into the ecu(fuzzy logic) for the transmissions. these controls tailored the shifts to how the vehicles were being driven. The ecu would change the shift points and firmness depending on the driving history.

So it makes sense if the vehicle is being driven in the break in period that the shifting will be earlier and softer than when the vehicle is broken in and being driven harder.

im not sure if disconnecting the battery will reset the trans ecu parameters or not maybe a toyota tech can chime in.

I keep reading that this Atkinson cycle and its constantly self-shifting transmission (that drives you nuts) are all things you just have to deal with to improve milage. So how come it doesn't? I drive conservatively and can't get nearly the mileage in town or on the road that is claimed on the sticker. My son's older Taco gets about the same mileage as my new one. That was a lot of money to pay for a truck with "new technology" only to be hugely disappointed.

Really? That's too bad. My '16 definitely gets better mileage than my '03. I'm getting 10.2l/100k. I'm 100% hwy though. I find sport mode is the only way to drive the truck. Helps with the erratic shifting a lot
