    Okay, 2100 rpm @ 100 kph

I am running 265/17/65 all terrain BF goodrich... likely matters right.

There is no doubt, there is still plenty of pedal but the not the feeling of being held back. IMHO

The OP was asking if the new transmission will be better, not for yall to bitch about the current 6-speed vs slushbox debate. There's plenty of threads out there for you to do that so run along :)

Yes I think Toyota is going to improve it. The main focus of this new generation is gas mileage. The current transmission drawbacks have been made very clear to them. I'm thinking there will be a true overdrive 6th and a tighter map.

I don't think we were bitching, as a new car owner, I am unaware of any issues the manual transmission has, having owned many different manufacturers manual cars, VW, MG, BMW, and Hyundai, I am quite satisfied with this 6 speed, I am not sure what I would change, as I am really enjoy this shifter. I was trying to understand the issue is all.

Noticed on a video of the launch that the graphic for the 6spd manual shows the Reverse gear to the right of 6th. The opposite corner of where it is now (left of 1st)

Well I've been wanting to get into a 4.0L 6sp because I miss driving my 2.7L 5sp but according to what I've been reading here on tw I am better off sticking with the auto... bummer.

My 2006 6-Speed trans with 58k miles was replaced under warranty. It didn't "go out" but it did grind something fierce when shifting from 2->3 and 3->4. All other up and down shifts were fine. The dealer cited "known issues" when they told me over the phone it was being replaced. I've never been happy with the 6-speed, but it doesn't bother me. It actually drives better if you don't even use the clutch (If reading this post is your first inclination that this is possible then DON'T DO IT)
I'm 33 and in my life I've owned 5 vehicles, all Manuals (not counting the cars I've bought my wife) VW, Datsun, SAAB and two Toyotas. Other than the Datsun and the first Toyota Not a single one of them has had the same reverse engagement and that seems like a really sorry way to put down the system. The SAAB was the hardest one to learn. So I guess I'm kinda a fan but at the same time, not a fan. Either way it will still be in my garage 20 years from now, I guarantee it.

This forum is pretty awesome, but remember its full of biases and opinions.

Gas Mileage? HUH. so for 1 MPG is worth having an outbox? OK... well its true that manuals were once the far superior choice for this but is that why we all bought a truck, to save on gas? hahaha
"Which is Stronger"? rawr! LOL some of the negative comments about the standards is kinda funny, really.

If you want a manual, go get one. They are still hella fun to drive!

    Here's another bias/opinion for you:
I drove a 98 Civic Coupe 5spd manual for 6 years. For a entry level car, this transmission was SLICK. Honda really made a good product and this car shifted great from start to finish.
In 2005 I sold the car and bought a '04 Silverado short box 4x4 auto with the small V8. I always wanted a truck, mainly a Taco, but the Chev was six grand less than a Tacoma and had way more bells and whistles and power. It was a great truck.. Drove it for 9 years. Strong engine, strong transmission, never disappointed. But I often missed having a standard. I found myself thinking more and more how I wished it was a manual.
In 2013 I bought my Taco. I wanted a quad cab truck and the full-size p/us are just too big for what I need in the city. I preferred to try a standard but took out the auto too. Coming from a V8 Chev, the V6 pickups (Nissan AND Toyota) felt so underpowered (sorry guys, but its true). I felt like the difference was night and day. Granted only a few test drives to judge, but I was certain I wouldn't be happy downsizing to an V6 auto. Before I went looking for full size again I took the standard Taco out: WOW. This truck was FUN to drive. It made me think of being a 16yo kid working at a Toyota Lot for my first job. The truck was way more fun to drive than the auto. So... I bought one.
Two years later... still loving the truck. Yes, Ive had some quirks: Toyota ended up changing the transmission for me and had a few headaches related to this, but despite this, I'm still glad I have the standard truck. The truck is bumpy, small, quick, and matched to a standard it makes for a way more fun drive.

Having learned to drive on a '94 Chev longbox 5spd manual truck (trust me, that's a rough, unsophisticated truck manual transmission)

Another opinion, but mainly to say that if a standard is what you want, why be so swayed but others. Even having had a headache and new transmission, i'm still pumped to get in the truck and let it rip. Like I said, my old Chevy was a fun ride with LOTS of power. I'm way slower off the line in the Taco, but my smile is way bigger.

    Good Luck!

That's the exact way I would have described it too. I also ditched a perfectly fine 2013 6-speed for a 2013 Auto only 7 months after purchasing.

Manual, even a crappy one FTW. Anyday over any auto. Autos are for cripples, including mental cripples :p

But more seriously - the mule pictures from last year suggest completely redesigned gearbox, so hopefully it's nothing like the "crappy" 2nd generation one.

Tacotrooper thanks a lot for putting in a long post for me.
Rest assured I am not merely swayed by the opinions here on tw, I do have reasons.

If I trade my truck right now it will have to be for one with the same miles and year model. I had wanted a 4x4 manual but the problem is since the 6sp manual is already problematic, I don't want to get in one with 120k miles on it. I have no problem driving my truck for a million miles but that's because I know how this one has been treated for most of its life. Buying a used Tacoma even though I trust them, I am having to deal with somebody else's maintenance or lack of and that is even more risky with this manual specifically. So I think I'm best to stick with this truck until I get a new Tacoma in a few years.

And when I do, it will be a manual!

Indeed, that headset transmission they had in the mule would have a steel quill just like the 5 speed, so likely no more squealing throwout bearings :)

I guess we'll have to wait to see just how well it shifts. Having put more than 100k miles on manual transmission Hondas, the Toyota transmissions I've had were certainly a downgrade in personality.

I love to read arguments about transmissions. I don't own the 6-sp, nor did I consider it, since it is not an option with a DCLB. I love manuals, and have always owned at least one at any given time (9 different MT cars and trucks from 6 manufacturers over the years). However, a reliable, solid auto in a truck is, IMO, a better tool for towing, launching boats, etc, even if one knows how to handle a clutch.

For the record, I grew up driving a 1972 Chevy C1500 with a 350 and a three-on-the-tree (for those of you that know what that is), which was closely followed by a 1978 Chevy Nova with a three-on-the-tree. Anybody that complains about long throws and loose shifting in a modern manual truck transmission needs to drive one of those.

Ahh, those were the days! My truck in High School was a '70 FJ40 with a 307 V8 conversion. The three speed column shift was a chore, especially with no synchros in 1st gear. I converted it to floor shift and it helped a little, but it was still an experience to drive. I was about to go with a Muncie 4 speed conversion (4 whole forward gears!!!), but the frame and body cancer was just too bad to put any more money into it.

The manual trans is way better in the mountains here in Colorado and the extra torque in 6th is used a lot when I don't have to downshift when I go up an incline. I hear the auto trans shifts out of 5 at the slightest hill which would drive me crazy out here.

Personally, I think manual is mainly focused toward real off-road users and not highway runners. Toyota has made it clear as to why they still offer manual trans. Of course highway runners only, will always complain about manual trans.... if that's the route they choose to go for highway use. :)

Manual for me all the way! ;)

What rpm's would 35mph be at in reverse while in low range with new six speed trans?
