Toyota corporate found that many new 6 Speed automatics exhibit a 3-4 gear shift flair. Therefore, Toyota has declared it is characteristic of this transmission. There is currently no fix. To be fair, Toyota did replace my transmission once, trying to fix the flare. After the 2nd transmission began flaring, the gave me a Platinum warranty. I feel they treated me fairly.

sorry to hear that, so probably not a bug to be worked out by 2018, correct? any chance Toyota will revisit this at a later date?

The master tech, at my local dealership thinks 2018 should be clear of the issue. I am hoping I can get the issue resolved down the road. Perhaps it will be a simple TSB that programs around the valve body flaw.

That's would be cool. I've noticed a couple of shift flares in my 2017.

It's not clear to me based on these threads. Did the shift flare happen before the TSB on your truck? I still haven't had that applied. The R-D delay while annoying, has a workaround so I've avoided taking the truck in for that. Thought I might someday though.

My truck has a very mild flare from 1-2 or 2-3 (not sure, very intermittent) and only when first driving when the truck has not completely cooled down from a previous trip. Never experienced the 3-4 flare.

Thank you for the info albeit not good news. I wonder why it is labeled a transmission characteristic when some of our issues arose only after the tsb was applied. Regardless I will maybe ask for a platinum warranty as well. My major concern is that when giving acceleration the vehicle will lurch forward when the shift occurs and although I am not "out of control" it isn't a wanted experience for safety reasons.

I still have not heard back from my dealership but will update that thread when I do though I now expect a similar statement.

Hello. I never drove the truck pre-TSB. The TSB was applied before I took delivery. The flare is due to a mis-engineered valve body. A future software patch will like help with the 3-4 flare.

It will be interesting to see what Toyota does with this transmission going forward.

This happened twice when I first got my truck (maybe two in the first two months). Never happened since, but I believe it is addressed by the TSB (I have not gotten the flash). It was also winter, so I'm curious if I will get a couple more this winter.

After you mentioned TSB I looked it up since I didn't know what that acronym stood for... then I found this article... but the report says harsh shift from 1st-2nd while mine is usually 2nd-1st.

Hopefully it was just a new engine break in type thing and goes away like yours did.

I also have only noticed it do it 2-3 times but it was really noticeable.https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/transmission-tsb-0077-16.441214/

I have a new 2017 Limited and have experienced a few issues as well, the lunge forward and reverse when first starting out cold, or when slowing down at a light it seems it bangs down to first gear. I have read a few posts from different places about the transmission issues. While I have been a mechanic for lots of years, mostly jets and industrial hydraulics I haven't heard the term "shift flair", can someone describe the perticulars of this phenomenon?

Ok, let me ask yall this. If you're on the freeway cruising along at around 70 mph in 6th and then step on it to pass someone and i mean pedal to metaland it drops down to 3rd or 4th, do you get a flare before it engages? It's like in a manual transmission if you downshift without taking your foot off the gas and not being quick enough with the clutch. Ive noticed this just a few weeks ago and I seriously don't step on it often. I actually baby this bitch so its driving me nuts every time it happens

Me and another guy had the same issue downshifting to first with a bang...

I believe the OP put a video on his post when he shifts the Rpms shootup about 1k-1.5k before the shift happens... I'm not exactly sure but that's what I got from watching the video.

That's not normal. Ive never seen an automatic transmission do that and it be normal. To me, that looks like a slipping transmission, and I wouldn't except it. Have you checked fluid level?

I don't get that symptom. I get the 3-4 up shift flare when the transmission is run for the first acceleration after sitting for over 6 hours.

It appears TW members have labeled everything they don't like about the transmission as "shift flare" and expect the single TSB out now to fix everything they don't like about the transmission itself.
