Got my new 2016 Tacoma SR5 2 days ago. From things I have read in TW it seem like a good idea to me to ask them to check the transmission in front of me to make sure it was/is full. (Auto Transmission with tow package). They said they couldn't then because it takes "2" hrs to check trans., That I should make appointment and come back, DOES IT TAKE 2 HRS TO CHECK and IS IT WORTH GOING BACK?????

Sounds right, those transmissions have to be at a very specific temperature in order to read the fluid level accurately. I've heard of people having to leave them with the dealer all day before.

They are sealed transmissions. A pain, but they are in most modern cars. Definitely worth going back, if it's a reasonable drive. I'm 45 min from my dealership so I'm having them check trans fluid at 5000 mile inspection next week

I really wouldn’t bother if I was you.
    I know I didn’t or haven't and won't bother.
Moreover, I have no issues of any kind as of yet with this truck.
Come to think of it, I haven’t checked transmission fluids levels in any new vehicles I've owned at all in about 15 yrs, and I’ve had a bunch, both domestics and Toyotas.
There appears to be ppl on TW with agendas and trolling issues. They’re probably marketers and haters for other car makes, shop owners hoping to get ppl to pay them to check their vehicles because they don’t trust the stealership, or who the hell knows.
And then there are ppl who have switched over from other car makers that had many problems with them and are totally paranoid of something breaking on them.
If the transmission fluid level was meant to be checked, they would have made it easy to do. If we do the math, they have millions more to loose than the few thousands we have if something goes seriously wrong.
Don’t listen to the nonsense going on here, enjoy your truck and sleep well. I know I do.
    Cheers! :)

@ The hammer; The post about the the transmission stated all or most weren't filled all the way because of not accounting for the transmission cooler. (I'm think out loud, do NOT know) The cooler wouldn't be cooled with trans. fluid any way would it ? Seems coolant would be from rad. (You can tell I don't work on trucks for a living)

I can understand why you might say this, but I only found Tacoma world because I was having issues with my transmission/truck and googling around eventually lead me here.

I would say that people with issues are probably a little more vocal and over represented on sites like this (because who goes online to search for or post about all of the non-issues they are having?), but I disagree that most are trolling or have ulterior motives. There are real issues with this transmission and quite a bit of evidence of low fluid. Unless all of those Toyota invoice pictures people have been posting are photoshops.

I have also never checked the ATF in any vehicle I've owed, but then again no vehicle operated like this.

The transmission cooler is a mini radiator where the transmission fluid passes thru, so yeah, it fills up with fluid but the amount isn't of any significance to the long term life of the transmission if it wasn't accounted for.

The issues ppl are having, or think they're having have nothing to do with the transmission being low on fluid.
Many have filled (most likely overfilled) them only to find no change in performance.
The issue is software related to the engine. The transmission shifts, but there is a delay in the engine moving forward especially when cold, and while the computer is learning. It should be fine in a few days. To be sure it's the software, all you have to do is use the ECT button.
    Cheers!

Um ok. Move on to the next thread saying the same exact thing because of your one off situation between yours and your dads truck. You are not a Toyota Mechanic nor Engineer. :smack:

Your spreading your one specific situation as fact for everyone else and we should all listen to you. STFU already, we've heard you in 15 other threads saying the same damn thing.

Alright , after a member has his transmission filled to the correct level , he notices there is still a delay to forward when its cold .
How much of a delay ?
Everybody,s take on the delay to forward is different .
Run your truck by a transmission shop and ask them if there is a delay .
I would like to hear what they say . A third party professional opinion has yet to be seen or documented on Tacoma World .
If you believe you still have a delay to forward , take it by a trans shop . Road tests are free

Just because you dont feel the improvements made by correcting your transmission fluid level , doesnt mean there was no benefit to topping up the fluid .
This 6 speed is a well built transmission that functions fine . Its the programming ( computer control ) that makes it feel like a slushbox .
We will see a flash to the ecm shortly I am sure

The gear cruncher has spoken... We may go in peace, for he has forgotten more about transmissions than we will ever know.
Not to be funny, but I'm really not joking guys. Most if not all of his replies are backed by mfg specs and facts. Truly one of the most knowledgeable guy on TW!!

    Hey thanks Capt Jrod .
I dont know everything . Thats one of the first things you learn as a technician . Admitting that you dont know everything .
I do have an extensive background in transmission repair and try to keep up with all the transmission related posts here at TW as well as many other web based forums . If I see a post starting to go south , I will jump in with my opinion .

I picked up on your posts about five minutes after I discovered that there was no dipstick. I've changed fluid in my taco, my wife's sequoia, and my dads tundra. Did you ever decide whether Toyota WS is synthetic or not? I used it three times but I'm thinking about amsoil

stop spewing crap. You are just misinforming the OP. I had mine checked and was 2qts low. MANY others have had them checked and its pretty much everyone is coming back with 3/4-2qt low range. it seems to be random on the amounts. So stop talking about crap you obviously seem to be to lazy to get checked. So when your trans dies dont cry

I was beating a dead horse in that post . When I posted about the WS fluid being garbage , I wasnt lying , however , at that time I didn't know sooo many 2nd gen trucks were low on fluid . Massive torque converter issues ! and I assumed it was the fluid . It was low fluid that caused the converter failures .

Sadly it wil run 35000 miles low on fluid. Long term damage is another story. Probably about a $3500 transmission? Maybe more being a 6spd?
