It's my fault. I was backing up a 6k lb trailer and the tongue got hung up at the drive way. Got the clutch a little hot and it has lost it's bite. I'd just drive it till it really starts slipping but I've got a trip from Oakland to eastern Idaho with the wife and our 3 year old coming up. We'll be doing a lot of BLM / USFS roads and don't like the idea of loosing the clutch out in the isolated Nevada country.

So, I'm going to suck it up and replace the clutch. I'm sure I'm about the only one with this truck to cook a clutch so soon, but if anyone has upgraded...got any recommendations? I'm reading good things about URD but have no experience with them.

    Looking at this one: http://urdusa.com/store/Trans,-Clut....html?osCsid=c9e861d865c19e193872ba0957215339

Also...anyone recommend a shop near Oakland for a clutch job?

You may have just glazed it. I'd be amazed if you totally fried it on one event, unless you are colossally inept. You stopped after you started to smell clutch, not after you had CLOUDS OF CLUTCH pouring out of your truck, right??

I had a kid who "totally knew how to drive stick, just hasn't in a while" drive my old car a few blocks while at 5,000 RPM going 10 MPH while I'm screaming FOOT OFF THE CLUTCH.:rofl:
It reeked, the smell of burnt clutch was thick in the air, and my clutch did slip for a while (day or two) until normal driving cycles brought it back to its senses. Was good for 50,000+ more miles and 23 PSI of boost.

Try driving it normally around town for a few days and see if it improves.

Haha! There are things I'm colossally inept at alright!

That's what I was thinking re: glazing it. Yep, smelled it and stopped. No smoke. But this was last fall (2016) and about 8k miles ago and it still feels spongey. It doesn't slip at all, even if I get on it in a high gear, but I'd rather spend the $$ to avoid getting stranded.

Can you put the truck in 5th or 6th gear and start moving from a stop? If you can the clutch is definitely fine.

I've always heard the test is to put it in the highest gear and drop the clutch. If it dies immediately the clutch is good, if it sputters and dies the clutch is getting bad.

I had a buddy in high school that let another friend attempt a burn out in his Taurus SHO. Well there was a lot of smoke, but it wasn't the tires. He held it bouncing off the rev limiter for about a minute smoking the clutch.

He had the car another 3 years and never had to replace the clutch. That Yamaha engine sounded pretty awesome though.

I doubt you roasted it with one backing event. I towed a 7,200lb trailer with my 2.7 and I smelt clutch after every take off, and while backing. It's still running strong.

    Brap, brap, brap!

I gotcha, and know these tests, but they don't give enough info. Every clutch will come to it's point that is one test away from a slip.

Yes URD is great. If you want race truck type clutch, the stage 3 (what I have in mine) can take pretty much most stuff you throw at it. But its pretty stiff and pretty much instant engagement with little slippage. Stage 2 is probably as close as you'll get to stock but still get better power on it

    Didn't see a stage 2. I'll look again.

Yeah looks like they only have stage 3. Honestly stage 3 isn't that bad, took me about a week to figure out the engagement zone and get used to it. Take offs are quick, alot less slippage, but I can still slip it enough off-road that I don't stall on hills, but I can slam it through gears when I want to go fast and there's zero slippage. I also have the lightweight flywheel for better acceleration, so if you had yours resurfaced or went with the heavy flywheel, I doubt you'd feel that much of a difference in take offs and such.

Cool, thanks. Yep, I just called URD and they only have the stage 3 so far (stage 2 on the way). I'm still debating between the URD and Aisin...

Well the stock clutch couldn't handle the supercharger power, within 6k miles it was all glassed over. I'm going on 30k now on the URD clutch, have smoked it a couple times on accident (thought I was spinning tires in the sand, was not) and it's still going strong with zero slippage. The stage 3 is good up to 550hp IIRC, and I'm well below that, so I've got that extra bit of protection

Any good hd ceramic clutchs out for these trucks? We always had expensive ceramic clutchs in the work vehicles because they never wore out and took a beating. Just curious is all.
