So, I saw a thread from 2010 that said to use the spare key, so you can get out of your truck and lock the doors behind you when started.

Has this changed as of yet? This past weekend I started my truck, got out and could not lock the doors. I was amazed. Did not understand how this could work, as someone could just walk up and drive away with it. I had a friend who didn't believe me as he thought the truck would stop when you step on brake or something. he walked out, opened the door, put it into drive, went ahead about 2 feet, went back two feet and was amazed that this could happen.

I am guessing we have to do the same thing still?

Yes, for whatever reason the remote lock doesn't work if you leave the truck running and get out of it.

They *key* inside the remote works just fine to lock the doors, so it's pretty much a non-issue IMHO.

What situations do you envision where you're leaving the truck running and unattended? For me the only instance would be keeping the AC running for my dogs, so I'm not too concerned about anyone being so stupid as to jump into their midst...

Winter time, cold outside, start it and let it run for a bit to warm up. Thats basically it.

The one Nick & KBVoodoo is doing is a lot better price than you'll find at shops or dealers, largely due to the self-install. Still, $130 plus shipping is more than $0 cost of using the key. :)

Using the key has a time-value cost.
Not an expense, but a cost nonetheless.

You can also check ebay if you're brave. Not sure how they can sell them for what it costs for the device itself but quite a few are doing it.

oh sorry no, looked at the url after I responded. That is a good price. US I am guessing so 35% on top of that but still better then $320 plus. I wouild be afraid I would mess it up. hmmm....interesting for the future. I can still buy the unit for my truck and buy her the one for xmas I suppose.

@axisofoil l if you want to get all MBAish over it, the time-value cost involves the time and effort of walking out into the cold to get to the truck, getting it open so you can get inside and start it, then using the key to lock it and walking back inside to finish getting ready. Add in a risk-weighted potential cost of wasted time going out to find the door's frozen shut and/or the lock cylinder is frozen and the associated hassle involved in those situations. Not to mention the potential time spent shoveling your way to the truck and sweeping snow off the door and immediate roof area before opening to the door to get in and start it.

All as opposed to looking out the window and pressing Lock three times. :D

@PJnc284 the component itself isn't terribly expensive (if you ignore Crutchfield's list price and look at Amazon), but Nick/KBV are putting in time/effort to flash it, loom the needed wires from all the unneeded wires, adding connectors, printing out instructions, boxing, and shipping it to you *and* providing support for folks. So there's a bunch of cost/value added above the cost of the component. I imagine they're making enough to be worth their time to do it, but not making a fortune.

Yes, I believe a skilled and resourceful person can DIY this a bit cheaper than the pre-built setup from KB VooDoo, but he or she risks getting into a corner and not having these guys handy to answer questions and help out. Plus he or she has to buy the gadget to flash the component with the appropriate firmware. Having looked at this pretty closely, I'd only suggest DIY if the person really just wants the challenge of figuring it out and/or is "particular" enough to really want to DIY even though the time-value cost favors buying it from KB VooDoo.

Yes, exactly. Or, in my case, the extra shoes you burn through while they melt on the driveway while manually locking/unlocking the truck.

I know how to do the calcs, but all our variables are different.

I'd bet 98% of the folks here couldn't actually accomplish (earn) anything in the time used for this example. And if they could, they'd better not be using the john, taking smoke breaks or texting their kids, 'cause they're losing more money doing that stuff than starting their vehicle. :D

You can't lock yourself out of a running SR5 with the auto lock switch either.
