I am still waiting on the official word from Toyota possibly tomorrow. I was assured and convinced yesterday this would be taken care of but after the convo I had today with my service provider I am freaking out again hence me seeing if anyone else has had a similar experience. This is my first Toyota and my first car bought brand new off the lot. I’m trying my best to stay hopeful they will take care of it.

Pretty sure this is the first seized driveshaft that’s been posted in the 3rd gen forums. Luckily you got off the road safely. This could of been a lot worse

How many miles do you have on it?
Was the leaky rear diff tsb done?
If it was, it kinda looks like the rear end had a failure and caused excess stress on the driveshaft, and made the u joint fail. Looks like a warranty deal to me.

Because this is a known issue to Toyota they will take care of it for you. Don't listen to some flunky at the dealership.

The u-joint didn’t fail, it’s still in one piece. The differential seized and the input sheared off.

This is cut and dry. It's a known issue. Toyota recalled damn near every Tacoma on the road for this exact issue. Sounds like the dealership that did the recall for you fucked it up one way or another. Honestly if it were me I wouldn't ever go to that dealership again. Go straight to corporate and tell them the situation then get it fixed some where else.

    Toyota Recalls Certain Tacoma Vehicles
    April 27, 2017
PLANO, Texas, April 27, 2017 – Toyota Motor North America, Inc., announced that it is conducting a safety recall of certain Model Year 2016 and 2017 Toyota Tacoma vehicles in the U.S. Approximately 228,000 vehicles are involved.

The involved vehicles have rear differentials that may leak oil. If a vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, the rear differential could become damaged, which can result in noise and reduced propulsion. In some cases the rear differential could seize, resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota dealers will check the rear differential for any oil leakage. If no leaks are found, all fasteners will be re-tightened. If leakage is found, the rear differential carrier gasket will be replaced with a new one, and new fasteners will be installed. If rear differential components are damaged, the rear differential carrier assembly will be replaced with a new one. This remedy will be at no cost to customers. All known owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail starting in the middle of June.

Information about automotive recalls, including but not limited to the list of involved vehicles, is subject to change over time. For the most up-to-date Safety Recall information on Lexus, Toyota and Scion customers should check their vehicle’s status by visiting http://www.toyota.com/recall and entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Safety Recall inquiry by individual VIN is also available at the NHTSA site: safercar.gov/vin. For any additional questions, customer support is also available by calling Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus Customer Service at 1-800-255-3987.

There was another although not sure if it was true in it entirety
Something about rear axle seized up on some Interstate, but many locals chimed in saying that area is continually busy as if I remember right it was just outside of LA. Sounded like where and how it locked up had potential to be stretched given op claimed to walk away no accident when it's a very busy area that it wouldn't have be possible.
Can't tell the truth of that as I'm on the other side of the continent and never been to California, but regardless it did lock up

I love that static overload torsion failure. That bearing sure got hot.
    Good luck OP.

Wow. I’d get a case started with corporate immediately, and stop posting about it. If you have to lawyer up, you need to fly under the radar.

If Toyota approves the work it will be paid for and the dealer should take the job. I might consider another dealer based off their attitude though.

Actually now thinking of it I remember one girl on here who had her rear end lock up. Not snap the drive shaft but it did blow up the rear end I believe. And I also think some dude doing donuts off-road blew his rear end on a video in which he posted

Why is there a warranty issue? The drive shaft is covered under your Tacoma warranty for 60 months/60000 miles.

It’s called friction my brother. I wouldn’t worry Toyota will make it right. The evidence is overwhelming in your favor. You have a valid claim rather than a complaint....and claims are always heard before complaints!
