This really could have been a lot worse than it was, glad you're ok.

Sometimes its hard to resist the urge to yell at the incompetence of the dealership but just remember you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar.
Either way I think you'll get taken care of.

I love how everyone is automatically thinking toyota is gonna make it right and cover this for him. If dealer already did said recall or warranty repair they can deny the claim. Especially if it’s the dealerships fault. They are gonna see negligence. So it could come down to OP’s word vs the dealers word. Hopefully neither happens and one of them take responsibility and just cover the repair for OP.

    Any updates OP?

Out of fluid. Probably part of the Diff recall for the leaks and it did exactly what the recall states can happen. Shows it can cause a failure and leave the driver out of control.

Just my experience and opinion here, dealers tend to hesitate or deny doing warranty work because they do not get paid unless Toyota approves it. If OP can get Toyota approval then they can go to any dealer, even if the local one denies them.

It also seems unlikely a negligence claim would be considered here. Even if the there was dealer work done before they were not over due for service on their drive line and this happened on a street so I don't see how they could pursue claiming abuse. I've heard of denials when relating to off road use, but that's hearsay.

The dealer not wanting to step up and offer to help is not surprising. If this failure is due to their previous shoddy work then all of the cost is on the dealer (if Toyota comes to that conclusion), why would they want to pay for that. For them its a better choice financially to deny to work on it.

I believe you have better knowledge about car mechanics and the car businesses in general than I do.

But that "driveshaft malfunction" was extreme.

    And potentially life threatening.

Can't imagine Toyota Corp. not taking notice of that mechanical failure.

That's why the advice to contact them was sound, imo.

Curious about how this plays out.

No accident so toyota won’t even look at any type of report. Only real way they would investigate it is if the part has a core on it and they examine it for research purposes. Other wise they just expect said failures. Unless it’s a repetitive problem nothing gets flagged. Also If the dealer is denying warranty it won’t be written up that way and there wouldn’t be any flag to them, they would see it as abuse or something on the customer part. OP really needs to talk with the service manager or call toyota Corp and request a field rep look at it. It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to see why the failure occurred. Most people aren’t gonna drain their rear end so it blows up. Obviously it wasn’t filled to the correct level when replace under the recall or it was leaking again due to a shoddy repair

I thought u-joints were supposed to be the weak point.

U-joints normally are the weak point, however, with a clear lack of lubrication to that bearing, I have zero doubt that it severely overheated the metal in that pinion shaft, causing it to snap when all of the violence was happening in the locking up of said differential.

Update: got my vehicle back in one piece from the dealership with the work covered under warranty. Given the extent of the damage the quick turn around was excellent. I’m addition I have to say they tried their best to take care of me getting me towed up there (no thanks to State Farm) and also putting me up in a rental.

I did call corporate and that was a waste of time as I had someone tell me that they looked at my VIN and it was not included in the recall which was an outright lie. I’m also quite sure that if I threatened legal action (although I was certainly preparing for it) they would have accepted no responsibility and would not have covered it.

My only concern is the resale value of the truck which was probably 2nd on my list for buying this truck to begin with so I probably will need to get a reappraisal of the value after all this.

Glad they got you fixed up. I know it sucks to have, just glad it didn't cause a crash originally, and they fixed it up under warranty.

You call that abuse? It wasn't even on pavement. This is EXACTLY what they did with those trucks in the commercials when the third gens first came out! I do this in my gen 2 quite a bit and no problems.
Now that I think about it, haven't seen those commercials since the diff recall broke news

Like I said in my earlier post they would take care of it. As for corporations admitting liability...they never ever do that ever, unless they are forced too that would open the door to punitive damages.
