Does the Tacoma use a paper or cotton-type filter?

toyota will not specify the fiber matrix they use

The element has a series of different gauge meshes -
coarse, medium and fine to trap every size particle. Other types of filters may only have one layer.

    Needle punched filter
The Toyota Genuine Filter Element is needle-punched to allow for a smooth,
efficient flow of filtered air to the combustion chamber for clean ignition of fuel.
Its dust catching ability is up to 30% higher than a normal after-market type filter.
Lesser quality air filters often use poorly constructed seals and filter elements which
allow dust and impurities into the engine, causing problems such as poor engine idle,
extra fuel consumption and unnecessary engine wear.

*needle punched does not mean there are needle-sized holes air can whizz through

More air in/out= more power. I learned a lot about this building a rocket 350 in a 70 Cutlass. Got into oversized valves, cam, headers, intake right down to valve guides and rockers to pump air more efficiently. 10.5:1 compression, milled heads, port and polish all helped to make big time power out of an olds 350. Things are different with computers and sensors controlling everything today, but an engine is nothing more than a fancy air pump.

TRUE but when you have a locked down factory ECU controlling engine management it is not as simple as opening
    up the intake.

Isn't putting a "performance" air filter in a modern vehicle useless to begin with?

I thought with modern ECU's it would just sense the excess air and adjust fuel/air mix to counter it. So in the end you don't really gain anything with the exception of sound.

    this.

you may see marketing babble that the TRD aftermarket CAI adds HP....~3-11hp
only on a good day an donly at specific rpm ranges
and no matter...that amount whatever it is, is not noticeable

it is the noise which makes you arse-dyno think it does more than simply annoy those around you

Does anyone know if an exhuast mod like flowmaster 44's would void the warranty?

There's some pretty good sound clips on yt with the 44 and 40. Any recommendations? I have not seen any exhaust systems for 16 Tacomas yet.

I've seen several articles that show a new/clean stock air filter works just as good as a K&N filter and as has been mentioned before oil screws up your MAF sensor, because everyone thinks a little more oil is better. The K&N was only marginally better at WOT and how many times are you running like that.

I've used K&N air filters on almost every vehicle I've ever owned and have NEVER-EVER had a problem with a mass airflow sensor. I think there are those that like to cry Wolfe just to hear themselves cry. Don't be dumb your whole lives.

You would be surprised how many people have messed up their MAF sensors from oiled filters. It's not some urban myth. Hell I even know one of my ASE mechanic buddies who messed up his MAF on his 99 Taco because of an over oiled filter.
