I'm not against some frontal protection, something that would have prevented Massa's injury and others like it. I'm not sure I like this halo thing. What do you guys think?

 

I'm with you. what if they had to get out in a hurry? I don't think it would have done any good for Bianchi either. His decelerating G forces alone, were off the charts. On the plus note , It wood definitely help with the fly overs witch seams to happen a lot.

 

Yeah it's kinda hard not to fly over with that spatula front end scooping you up. As far as the halo I think that I would rather see the closed cockpit. Although if the halo is on a hinge of some sort then getting out would be as easy pulling a pin and pushing your way out.

Doesn't that obstruct the view of the driver?! And seems just like another place to slap some corporate sponsorship stickers on. Just my 2 cents.

 

The Halo on Raikkonen's car was just a mock up to test visibility issues .

I'm with you. Some kind of a half or 3/4 windshield canopy thing. Not full fighter jet, but open on the top.

 

After Massa's accident the FIA introduced a new set of helmet requirements including the introduction of a " brow " reinforcment above the visor that is designed to withstand the same velocity of impact that Massa suffered in hit accident .

The Halo is designed to allow driver extraction and aid to a driver trapped in a vehicle while protecting the head from large debris like tires and wings and for other cars climbing on top

The concerns with a full bubble canopy was with not having access to a driver in an overturned car for example , fire , and to a lesser extent rain and a glare effect

 

It would have to be taller than the driver's head and would likely need a metal or reinforced top edge if it was to provide protection from vertical loads so you would end up with the same look as the Halo but without the front leg no ?

 

I don't think it would need to be reinforced with today's materials and technology.
I was thinking more like this:

 

In both of those pictures the glass would have to be taller to protect the driver's head from a tire or similar large debris

And it may be OK without a top edge IDK , I guess it depends on what the test loads are , plus as I was saying previously there was a concern with a glass concept because of rain and glare , especially in the lighted or light to night races
