Car companies do " just enough" to appease both their owners and govt. regulations. The cost effectiveness is always a factor. All other trucks are not immune to rust. I seen many a Ford or Chevy with rusted doors, rockers tailgates etc. in the same length of time Toyora owners complain about theirs. Off road vehicles are often driven in environments that accelerate frame rust too. Personally. I don't wait for rust to start and go through the tedious job of repair. Mine get an oil and grease treatment each year from new and it becomes a non factor. I look at it like a fall oil change....which takes about the same amount of time. Would you wait for your motor to make weird noises before you change the oil ? There are good products that combine with rust when it's minimal you can then just grease or oil over.

Dana corporation was old company, new company is called Dana holding corporation. They own a lot of assets from Dana Corp. but new company has new stock. So officially company that produced frames does not exists. It's the same thing like with GM old GM become something else and new GM with new stock took their place.

Buy a spray gun from JC Whittney or Eastwood & FF by the 1 gal can & hit everything if that (FF) is the route you are going.

Aerosol cans are cheaper overall. I don't want to rush blowing a bunch of over spray all over the paint

I was planning on doing both.. POR15 everything that I could get to...then paint it (POR15 is not UV resistant so you just paint it if exposed to UV), and then use Fluid Film everywhere....

That's why Harbor Freight has cheap disposable tarps.

I'm surprised that you have frame rust in Florida. I guess it's the salt air ha ha.

    Are floor mats a mod?
Bout once per year, I scale out any rusty spots, coat with strontium chromate, paint, and spray anything I can reach with Boeshield T9, which dries to a waxy film. Boeing uses it on planes, so that's prolly good enuf for my Taco. Once I started using it, I have only had about 3 or 4 places start to rust, and I think they are spots I missed spraying.

    Funny....
Many years ago they invented a material which was cheaper then going to the moon......paint. That works fine early in auto making before the metal corrodes...but once it does, it's nearly impossible to remove existing corrosion and repaint. That's where oil comes in.....unlike water which is an electrolyte and supports the formation of iron oxide ( rust) oil is an insulator and does not. Like wise grease as well...that's why we put a little grease on a battery post. Salt water is a much greater conductor the regular water and why metals rust faster in their presence.

Whats easier than paint is stainless alloys. but that would make people cry about the price even more

They were terrible from 79-85, so were the body's. 86-95 seemed to hold up far better, especially pickup's, 4runner's seemed to have issues with the shock cross member tube but nothing major. My 88 4runner's frame was flawless when I sold it in 2009, not even surface rust, that thing had 480,000km and years of offroad use, road salt and ocean air.

In AZ, you can do that for months...no rust
The body and frames switched roles when the Tacoma was introduced....Toyota definitely has the market cornered on rust.

See...the pre-tacoma body is shot, frame looks good though!
