I think the gearing and trans behind the 3.5 is what the real cause of the bad rap is from.

The guys with the 6spd manual rate the engine a lot higher than the slushboxers

Engine in my taco was just fine with the stock tune. Lots of power and none of those “TW issues”.

Tune just makes it so much more fun to drive.

OP, I see you had most all of the oil changes done by the dealer. How often did you check the oil level in between those changes? My thought here is that if you did not check it, it is possible they significantly overfilled or underfilled one or more, which could have caused some bearing damage. This is especially true in the mountains where you are changing the oil level on a grade while under load.

    Yeah.
I've been on multiple trips through the CO mountains with both 2nd and 1st genners along, all kinds of driving, carrying between 600-800 pounds of gear (maybe depends on how low on beer I am). I probably carry slightly more weight than the others, and they are in Access Cabs with the same size tires as me. I make it over the highway passes with ease and can go a lot further on a tank than any of the 2nd gens I am with. I generally have a quarter to an eighth of a tank more than they do at fillups, same size tank. Really the only difference I can tell between the 2nd and 3rd gen (I used to have a 2012 I would take up there) is that the 3rd gen shifts more and revs higher. Both work fine, and I actually think my 3rd gen makes it over the passes easier. That is my perception, and the actual HP and torque numbers align with that perception as well.

Anyway, I just hope the OP gets a better answer.

Never said the 3.5 was perfect just asked for facts over opinions. I was in my 4.0 Gen 2 for 8 years. Good solid truck with never any issues. But my Gen 3 has just a much power and more in the upper rpms. But that's the opinion of my butt dyno.
But a fact sheet seems to collaborate that.

:argue::annoyed: @MTgirl can we get a cleaning of this thread so we have more information about engine failure and not two people bickering about which engine is better? :angrygirl:

It's probably the engine and will need replacing.

I'd like to have checked the oil before you took it to the dealer. If someone screwed up the last oil change and oil leaked out over time because the oil filter housing was not installed correctly or the drain plug came out..... that would cause this.

Nope...thats called trading it as is....Dealerships don't care what half the condition of the car they are taking in is, they just run it down the auction block. As long as it starts and the AC turns on they could care less.

Before bringing "wont stay in 6th gear " argument, 1st -count gears, then look at the gears ratio for 2nd vs 3rd.

Its not designed to run in 6 gear on the highway with a load in it....There is a reason you tow haul with the overdrive gears locked out

And if you put the 3rd gen in S mode and lock out 6th gear...it will stay in 5th just fine with not problem as well...
