I meant for the ACC champ game.

 

I think they'll eventually go to an 8 team playoff. Each power 5 conference champ, plus the best 3 non champs.

 

I would rather see more games played but you know that would be a hang up with going to a real playoff.

 

If they go to this system, the turmoil and gnashing of teeth will still be happening because the 3 best non champs is up for discussion every year. lol.

I agree it makes sense to expand, but I think they are worried if they do expand to 8, then people will want 12 and so on.

Its strange, nobody complains about the March Madness when teams barely get it, sometimes over better teams...

I think so. I think UM may be riding a bit high.


Question though, why is Clemson above UM? I thought UM was sitting at #2?

 

UM was above Clem in the polls that don't matter. Neither one of those polls had Penn State anywhere near 12, but we saw how the committee value their W against OSU. But the Committee actually pays attentions. Michigan hasn't left the state once, and it was to beat a 2-6 Rutgers team. Yes, Clemson has played some close games, but their resume is far better than Michigan and they continue to win close games. Any semi-knowledgeable college football fan would agree. Clemson is also #1 in strength of schedule at this point in the season, even above Bama. It will all work itself out at the end of the year. I feel like Bama and Clemson have the best chance to stay put until the end.

Why would you want to turn College football, a sport important for 6 months into college basketball, a sport important for 1?

They should do 6 teams, 5 power conference champions, highest ranked wild card, top 2 teams have bye weeks in first round. Of course you're still going to have debate, but it gives the teams something to play for during the regular season and only ads in 1 additional game if 2-4 makes the championship game.

Just don't leave it to a committee to decide the teams playing.

 

I agree.

There has to be a definitive way to do this. Final strength of schedule, W/L, and other metrics along with an unbiased human element.

 

my objection to that logic is down conferences, like for instance this year the acc is way up, I don't think anyone would argue that both Louisville and Clemson would both deserve to be in the top 6, the sec right now would also have bama and tamu, and the big 10 could potentially have 2 teams in the top 6. it's not "fair imo to put a much weaker team from say the PAC or big12 over those just because they are the best in their conference.

I agree. I would argue that the committee would put Louisville in before a one-loss Pac-12 champ (if Washington loses). But now that Louisville is sitting at 7, they need some serious help. I dont see it happening.

 

especially since the 1 loss they have was a very close game to Clemson, I know a bunch of people (mostly those in pac12/big12) will say SOS is a trash way of ranking and who/how you lose shouldn't be as important as winning but that's bologna.

Been thinking about the 3-way tie scenario in the SEC West and finally looked up the tie-breaker. If auburn and TAMU win out, and Alabama wins out (until losing the Iron Bowl to auburn), the teams would be tied for 1st in the West. There is a whole list of tie-breakers, but none would decide it until the final two:

• Record of SEC East opponents
• Coin Flip

Each team's SEC East opponents this year are:

• Alabama - Tennessee and Kentucky
• auburn - Vandy & UGA
• TAMU - Tennessee and South Carolina

Vandy sucks, and UGA has under performed this year. It's very unlikely that their combined record would win the tie breaker, so auburn is S.O.L. in a 3-way tie scenario.

Alabama and TAMU both played (and beat) Tennessee, so Tennessee's record is irrelevant... SO, it would come down to KY's record vs USCe's record. KY is currently 5-3, and USCe is 4-4.

• KY still has to play: UGA, @ Tennessee, Austin Peay, and @ Louisville. Do you see two wins in there? I don't. I think they end up at 6-6.
• USCe sill has to play: Missouri, @ Florida, Western Carolina, @ Clemson. I think they can beat Mizzou and W. Carolina, but that's it.... so they also end up at 6-6.

Which means that Alabama and TAMU would still be tied... and the SEC West champ would be decided by a coin flip.

I hope it doesn't come to that.

 

but if it comes down to a bama and tamu tie, could they then not go head to head and say bama beat tamu? on another wth, if lsu wins out from here out they will win the NC and would have fired their coach mid season right? kinda funny, just saying (obviously hope it doesn't happen since we play them this weekend but still in theory it could)

 

If it came down to a 2-way tie b/w TAMU and UA, then we'd have the tiebreaker. What I just described is only for a 3-way tie. Just b/c auburn gets knocked out by the SEC East opponent rule doesn't make it into a 2-way tie again, unfortunately, though it would make sense.

 

yeah I realized you were talking about a 3-way.... tie but I had meant once au was rulled out again it would be down to 2 but the au would be all "but...but"

 

Yeah. It doesn't revert back to 2-way tiebreakers at that point, unfortunately.
