I could have just about written this. Same age. But my '13 is only 43k in and only a 5 lug. But it does everything I need it to, and probably a bit more if I asked it to.

At my 4.5k / yr average I'll only be at 101,500 and 23 yo when I'm 86. Probably when I give up autocross. :D

As far as the salesman's demise of the v6? Did his lips move? That makes it subject to being a lie.

Toyota Japan already announced there will be a V6 option in the 4th gen. It will probably be in the Pro.

If you can make the numbers work, i think it would be worth going for the new truck. Clearly you don't drive much but maybe the new one will get you traveling more or simply enjoy it being the new latest and greatest. Also not that you will care when this time comes, but an end of the model year tacoma will be significantly better valued than a first year. Maybe pass it down to a grandson and the 2023 will be much safer to drive.

Rough numbers but if you could get around $25k for yours and buy the new one for 37k, the 12k plus a little sales tax seems reasonable.

if that is the numbers the dealer comes at me with then yes, i am all in.
it all hinges on what they will give me for my truck.

Go for it OP. I’m 56 and have owned my Prerunner for 13 years and still love it. 161k and still going strong. I’m a 3 pedal guy and was thinking long and hard about getting one of the 2023 MT’s. Now with the 4G going to have a manual I’m going to wait several years. However, every time I think about upgrading I just can’t bring myself to spend the money when my truck is fine. Your truck sounds like it’s in great shape and worth a lot. You would probably do a lot better selling it on here vs. the trade. Make yourself happy my friend and best of luck with your decision.

Ok, first of all, my dad is 77 ish, lives in Manoa. I get a lot of what you are thinking about, OP, I hear it from him too. The (in my opinion) irrational fear of unknown problems.

I own a 2016 OR. My dad owns an ‘06 SR5 with 250k. If he can stomach that, you can handle your 2016.

Here is the deal. As has been described in detail in the 4th Gen threads, 2016 was not a major change. Other than body panels and interior and the v6, it’s the same truck as it was in 2015. You see a fair number of people doing 3rd Gen conversions on 2014 RC and calling it a Pro. The suspension is nearly identical. Tons of aftermarket support.

I had one problem with mine which wasn’t covered by warranty, but it was $500 for some new bearing in the transmission which was since fixed. That’s about the level of risk you are facing with such a reliable design. A few hundred or worst case maybe 1000-1500 unexpected. Not saying the market returns and inflation are tailwinds but cash is definitely king right now so I’d keep your powder dry.

The ‘16 is actually pretty special precisely because of how much tech it doesn’t have. No adaptive cruise, no sliding rear window, no auto headlights. Mine has no BSM though I do like that one in our minivan.

The last thing I would ever do is trade your truck in. Heck, I’ll come get it and ship it to my dad if that’s what it takes to avoid you giving the local dealer such a crazy deal.

But I really do think you should keep it. Maybe swap the grille out, rear bumper, gears and make sure it’s running the latest stock tune. Also get that soft as f offroad suspension out and some nice fox or king instead. You’ll have a much nicer truck than brand new and spend less getting there.

Warranty is worth practically zero on a ‘23, it’s had 18 years to iron out the kinks.

With all that said, super easy to trade out that scooped hood I’d bet, even on Maui. The bigger question for a sport is the 17” wheels and suspension differences. Definitely drive one before you consider it. I assume the locker isn’t a massive need for you?

Smart, let them get the bugs worked out. the 2016's and 17's took the hit for the 3rd gen.

If you're going to trade in, make sure you trade up and get exactly what you want. If you go for a model package you don't want, you'll likely just wish you had your 16 back.

I think the new 4th gens are nice. I'd rather have one of those than a left over 23. I'm curious to see how the new 4Runner looks too. The dealers trade in offer on the 16 seems low. Have you looked on KBB to see what it's worth?

They probably felt like they were giving their work away with very little benefit.
To be honest; I'm surprised it took this long.

You can look up values by make and model. Request the value sent to you not a dealer who will buy it.

    @kahanabob

I entered your trucks year, model and mileage based on my zip code, silver paint (random color) and best overall vehicle condition. Here's the estimated trade in range. Private party values would be higher if you sold the truck yourself. It sounds like the dealer is really trying to rip you off on trade in offering only low 20s. I wouldn't take anything less than mid 30s. Ideally your truck plus 5k-7k should be fair if you want the 2023.

how did you get past the VIN and e-mail address they want right out of the gate. i figured after i give them all that info then they will want $$.
mine is 2WD. the 2023 i was looking at is $37 don't think they will get into the 30K area.
after seeing the dashboard on the 4th gen i am more inclined then ever to do a deal.
    Thanks
