Update- I live in Massachusetts, south shore. The dealership called in a Master Tech to assess the issue and correct it accordingly. If they provide a TSB I'll post it. The main issue I wanted corrected was the kazoo whistling. I'll post the video I provided as evidence of the problem

Ok, after about 820miles on my truck...Now i'm getting a howling sound at 55 mph. Why it just started?...who knows. Anyway, it does NOT seem to be wind related. It's more of a driveline harmonic thing. At around 55 mph (+/- 3 mph), when you let OFF the gas, the sound begins (like a wolf howling in the distance), but when you step down on the gas again..it goes away. No other speeds can this sound be heard...weird!!! The sound is low enough that the radio or conversation in the cab can distract you from noticing this sound.

This problem has now been solved. There's holes in the Lower control arm that whistle like a beer bottle in a wind.

Ok, my HOWL problem has been addressed by Toyota today. I have a different howl noise than the rest of you. Mine is in the differential. They have ordered replacement parts/gears that have the proper tolerances. Others have had this problem too, and Toyota is taking care of people. I am 10th in line, so about two weeks before they can get to me. But, its safe to drive until then. Glad they have figured it out and getting it takin care of. :)

Haven't experienced this (yet). And hopefully I won't. I've driven my new truck at speeds up to 75mph with no noises. Crosswinds and passing traffic aren't creating noise either. Cabin is nice and quiet.

Have you checked to make sure the weather/turbulence strips are installed on your truck between cab and bed?

not sure who you are asking...but if your were asking me, then yes. I do have the strips on there. My noise was not wind related because the noise only happened when letting off the gas pedal...push down on the gas pedal and the noise went away. Again this was all around 55 mi/hr. So, the head Toyota mechanic rode with me and agreed, it was NOT wind related. He then called the Toyota plant/factory and talked with someone who told him exactly what was going on: a couple differential gears had improper tolerances on some model combinations. I'm So relieved they have figured it out, and will soon be fixed.

Sorry, I was replying to the original post. I guess I should use this quote feature.

Which model/packages do you have? My auto trans shifts real hard, but other than that I haven't noticed any quirks.

My truck needs to break in before I start picking every little thing apart. There were only 7 miles on mine when I drove it off the lot. Lots of breaking in to do.

I've read somewhere else the hard shifting thing has been addressed by low tranny fluid. Might check that.

This video isn't from toyota directly but it is an interview with the head designer of tacoma and tundra and they talk about aerodynamics a bit. They don't mention the whistles but it explains the air dam, the vortex fins, the weather stripping between cab and bed, etc.

I've got a TRD Sport & I'm having this same issue, only with strong cross-winds.

Take a piece of duct tape and put it over the two forward holes on the drivers side lower control arm. Take it for a drive and see if the noise stops. That was my issue. I got a couple 9/16 plastic plugs off eBay for $5 and used a punch to poke a hole in the center for draining. No more noise.

I'm taking mine in for this tomorrow. Did you end up getting it fixed and if so, what did they do? Any info I can have would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, Toyota sent new differential gears (new tolerance sizes) that fixed the noise. Warranty covered everything.

I noticed that wonderful "whistling noise" on my 2016 SR5 double cable the first time I drove it >45 MPH. Sadly, it happened on the way HOME from the dealership after purchase. At first, I ignored it as a minor nuisance and just turned the radio up a little. The noise only seemed to happen between 46 and 58 MPH and I'm usually <45 or on the highway >60. 6 months later I decide to take it in and the local Master Technician decides the windshield needs to be replaced. That doesn't change a thing so they open a case with Toyota and decide to change the grill. Whistling noise is now gone.
