2016 rack and pinion pop/ creaking

Developed a loud pop which seems to be coming from the rack and pinion bushing. Not really sure if it's cause for concern, or if it would be covered by a dealer under warranty to replace the bushing.

 

Looks like the bushing has failed. Hiw many miles on the truck? Are you running stock tires and suspension?

 

6" lift, might just be loose, tighten up the bolts to the rack.

I would strongly doubt warranty, you likely have different spindles and 35" tires. These put wear on the stock items.

Why do you say that?

 

I just had a second look at the video. It looks like the bolt that runs though the bushing is loose. I can see the head of the bolt moving around. Tighten it up and see if the noise goes away.

 

Larger tires and suspension modes can effect your warranty claims but sometimes your dealer will still get it though if they were the one that did the install.

 

Welp the bolt wasnt loose from the get go, famn near too the force of god to get it off and when we eliminated the bushing the noise went away. Re tightened it as much as i could get it and its back. Tried sprayi g some whitle lithium on it to try and aleviate some of the poppping. Seems like its just a little rusty and itsnt moving freely enough, thua the pop.

 

Yeah, definately put the lift in myself haha

 

The rack shouldn't move around that much. either the bolt is still loose or the rubber bushing in the rack is shot. I pretty sure there are aftermarket bushing that can be installed to take the movement out when using bigger tires and a lift.

 

Do i have to remove the rack to replace the bushing though?

 

I'm thinking yes.

 

Then is it really worth it haha bushings are only like 20 bucks but thats quite a bit of work to remove a rack... maybe i can loosen it and sqeeze them in

 

But before you do that tight the bolt with an impact.

 

The problem is getting the old one out.

 

Cant even get a ratchet on it... have to tighten it like a cave man haha

 

Cant even get the bolt out of it. This is going to turn into a solid x2 30 rack project haha

 

Body mount, It's been a common problem that was carried over from the second gens. Has a similar sound when worn. Happens to a lot of the guys that get rowdy with their trucks.
