Howdy folks. LOONG time lurker here. Ive Owned 3 Tacomas since 2009 and have used these forums as a major source of knowledge and information. Been lurking and lurking up until I discovered something worthy of bringing attention to.... RUST.

I just bought a 2016 Tacoma but forgot to inspect it more thoroughly before buying but I noticed rust in the underbelly. This is something I've never seen on my two previous Tacomas... This current one is a 2016 DCLB Limited Trim and has 44K miles on it. Its going into the Groove Toyota of Littleton Colorado for (TSB) 0077-16 update and a "rust inspection"

Upon first glance, what do you think? Is this acceptable for a truck that is 4 years old? What do you think the dealer will say tomorrow?

Looks fine to me for a 4 year old truck. I would treat it to prevent any further spreading though.

Thanks for your opinion. It has about the same if not more rust than my 2005 Tacoma ever had.

It all comes down to how much the last owner washed the underside. My 2018 has zero rust on it, and I live in MN where there is more salt on the roads than in the ocean. But I wash every other day in the winter, and fluid film the frame multiple times a year.

Makes perfect sense. At what point do we deem this an acceptable amount of rust? Is it worth treating or selling?

That is a pretty small amount. I would keep, but treat the frame with fluid film or similar. The bolts and nuts I would also spray with penetrating oil and then spray with fluid film to ensure when you need to remove them they dont break off.

You can wire brush off the rust that is there, paint it, then do the fluid film.
