Also, YMMV, but in my area people are ALWAYS dumping rack parts and full kits on Craigslist in excellent to like-new condition for cheap. I'm like you and just ordered tracks on my Leer, and when it comes in I'm going to start combing CL for a deal. If you don't absolutely NEED the rack right away, I'd recommend you do the same. You'll probably find everything you need really quick...the only possible exception being the landing pads, you may have to wait a bit longer to find someone selling the exact config you need.

Go to a Yakima or Thule dealer or get on their websites and configure your setup so you know the exact part numbers you need for everything, then you'll be good to go shop the secondary market.

Had my Leer 100XR installed yesterday. Flip down front slider, gray headliner, and tracks (only). I haven't decided on Thule or Yakima for the feet, towers and crossbars yet. image.jpgimage.jpg

I got my rack setup from ARE years go. but when I got my new tacoma I did the same thing with the z series. Just had them install the track, and then I re-installed my rack system. I did however need to get the over the cab setup for a canoe. I just went in to REI and checked their fit guide. You need the tower, landing pad (I got the gutter mount kind) and don't forget the round bar adapter if you are going that route. As mentioned, it wouldn't hurt to check craigslist. this stuff is expensive for what it is. but it does last a lifetime.

    Hi all,
I am also planning on getting a leer 100xr but have a question in general regarding the ventilation in the camper shell. I was wondering what are most of you guys/gals are doing about ventilation for pets that are in the back camper shell?. Is the AC from the cabin good enough to keep the shell cool for your pets if both the rear window and camper shell front window is open?.

    Thank you for your time.

I've never had a sliding glass window on a topper before now. But I would find it hard to believe it would be enough to cool down the bed of the truck. seems like it would get wasted in between the two. I always just cracked the sliding windows and my furry ass golden retriever never seemed to mind. Would always bring a water bowl for when we might stop at a rest stop or something we would give him some water.

    Not in a million years.

Crank up your AC to the max, and as soon as you open the rear window, you'll lose 95% of the AC's efficiency. Absolutely no cool air will reach the interior of the canopy.

I strongly considered having my dog ride in the truck bed, under my own Leer 100XR. In addition to the open front slider and slid-open windoors, I planned on installing several 12V fans that would be mounted directly on the dog's kennel.

    Factors to consider:

    - even with the fans, that still won't be enough to maintain a reasonably cool temperature inside the canopy on hot summer days
    - opposite problem in the winter - no way to keep the bed warm
    - tons of dust gets in through the tailgate any time you're off-road
    - no way to hear/see the dog in case anything is wrong (motion sickness & throwing up / random pain / needs a washroom break)
    - tailgate is quite high to jump on / off (bad for the dog's joints) and it's not all that much fun lifting/lowering a large dog
    - the bed is a dangerous place to be in case of an accident; it is not made to "survive" an impact as the cabin is

In the end, my dog rides in the cab and I put up with the bi-weekly vacuuming/cleaning.

    // edit

Methods of transporting a dog, rated from safest to most dangerous (in my opinion):

    - gunner kennel, secured with tie downs in the rear of the cab
    - other quality kennel, secured with tie downs in the rear of the cab
    - proper dog harness secured to seat belt in the rear of the cab (make sure harness is rated/tested for dogs of similar size)
    - gunner kennel in the bed, secured with tie downs
    - dog loose in the rear seats
    - other quality kennel in the bed
    - dog loose in the front seat
    - dog loose in the bed

I have 3 dogs and that's the main reason I have a cap on my truck. Get the removable front window it helps a lot with ventilation on hot days. With just the front slider there is still plenty of fresh air entering the cap with rear widows open. I'm on my second leer XQ and the rear windows only open at the bottom and back of the window and still do just fine. Someone on here also sugested to put a inner tube between the the two sliders to help AC or heat to enter the back. I've used foam to do the same but will be finding a inner tube to use instead. It helps but if it's really hot I try to leave the dogs home. When it's really cold only the non husky rides in front sometimes.
OTD $2400 w/ removable front window, carpeted and Thule tracks.

Got confirmation my shell will be in Wednesday :bananadance::dancingbacon::broccoli:. I asked my guy if there was anything I need to know about mounting it other than the obvious, because I am doing it myself with some coworkers, and he said some trucks come with a wire at the end of the frame rail put there just for wiring in a camper shell 3rd brake light. For those of you with your cap already, can you tell or know where your 3rd brake is wired into? I don't mind tapping into my left rear brake but I really like the idea of an existing wire possibly being there. I will look myself later but thought I'd ask then report

Why does it need pipes out the side? Couldn't you just hole saw some holes in the side of the bucket?

Mine looks to be tapped into the left rear brake light. Wires run directly to this location.

I have an SR5 (don't think it matters which trim level, though) and they tapped into the left rear light. The Leer dealer installed a wire disconnect (standard) between the tapped wires and the fuse box (mounted inside shell) to make removal super easy.
